Join Converse Associate Professor Susan Tekulve and Converse MFA alumna Rhonda Browning-White on March 19, 2025, at 8 PM in Zimmerli Common Room, adjacent to Howard Hall, to celebrate the launch of their two new books and a reading from each.
Susan Tekulve is launching her new poetry collection, Bodies of Light; Converse University MFA Alumna Rhonda Browning-White is celebrating her new novel, Filling the Big Empty.

About the Authors
Rhonda Browning White is the author of two books of fiction, including The Lightness of Water and Other Stories, winner of the Press 53 Award for Short Fiction, and her most recent book, the novel Filling the Big Empty, which was published by Redhawk Publications. She is currently editing the Appalachian Grit Lit Anthology, forthcoming in 2025 by Redhawk Publications. Her work also appears in The Ignatian Literary Magazine, Entropy, Prime Number Magazine, Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel, Qu Literary Journal, HeartWood Literary Review, Bellevue Literary Review, Steel Toe Review, Ploughshares Writing Lessons, Mountain Echoes, Gambit, Justus Roux, Bluestone Review, and in the anthologies Appalachia (Un)Broken, Ice Cream Secrets, Appalachia’s Last Stand, and Mountain Voices. Rhonda has an MFA in Creative Writing Fiction from Converse University in Spartanburg, SC and was awarded the Watson Fellowship and a Standiford Scholarship from Eckerd College’s Writers in Paradise. She lives in Hickory, NC.
Susan Tekulve’s newest book, Bodies of Light, is her first full-length poetry collection. She is the author of Second Shift: Essays (Del Sol Press) and In the Garden of Stone (Hub City Press), winner of the South Carolina Novel Prize and a Gold IPPY Award. She’s also published two short story collections: Savage Pilgrims (Serving House Books) and My Mother’s War Stories (Winnow Press). Her nonfiction, fiction, and poetry appeared in journals such as Denver Quarterly, Indiana Review, The Georgia Review, Connecticut Review, The Louisville Review, Puerto del Sol, New Letters, and Shenandoah. Her web chapbook, Wash Day, appears in the Web Del Sol International Chapbook Series. She has received scholarships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. She teaches in the BFA and MFA writing programs at Converse University.
