From the artist:
“Within the romantic beauty of the southern landscape, there is a layer of heavy historical context that is still buried in the lowcountry soil. Simultaneously, I associate a sense of longing to the terrain, a strong nostalgia for my rural upbringing, a view of home that is both fading and
regenerating, joyful and aching. The last layer I witness is the threat of the land – its future against developers, and eroding coastlines. Through plaster, paint, and photography, I grasp at these different perspectives – a past, present and future that I see rooted in the southern
topography before me.
By constructing my own personal artifacts, I will negotiate this triad of narratives the land embodies for me through multi-media, broken formed sculptures, and paintings. The exploration of shard, shell or fossil like shapes and combination of materials reconcile multiple
emotions towards home: haunting, healing, concern and care. The imagery of compiled materials, palm fronds, Spanish moss, coastal skies and family photographs sways between collapse and reconstruction.”
