James A. Hymas

Associate Professor of Mathematics Emeritus

Dr. Hymas retired in May 2017.

Jim Hymas came to Converse College in 1978 as an instructor in the mathematics department. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1974, his Master of Science degree in mathematics in 1976 and his Doctorate of Arts degree in mathematics in 1980 all from Idaho State University. He received the Kathryn Amelia Brown Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1982. Professor Hymas was promoted to associate professor of mathematics in 1984 and was named chair of the department in 1981. In addition to chairing the department, directing the mathematics education graduate program and teaching mathematics courses, he was the advisor for undergraduate mathematics majors and MEd and MAT mathematics graduate students. He has given several presentations on the mathematics of gambling at various locations including Lake Tahoe, Nevada and Nova Scotia, Canada.

In his spare time, Jim spends his time working out, studying and applying the mathematics of gambling.
