Famed Naturalist to Speak at Converse
On Nov. 4, Naturalist Rudy Mancke will visit Converse to give a lecture on the natural history of South Carolina. The lecture, which will be held in Hartness Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., is part of the annual Aline Saunders West Memorial Lecture series.
“This will be a hands-on presentation,” said Rudy, who is a distinguished lecturer in natural history for the University of South Carolina. “I will mainly focus on the geological history of South Carolina…going back to the formation of the formation of the Appalachian Mountains nearly 270 million years ago. I’ll bring a few interesting fossils from that time period.”
Rudy is most popular from his days of hosting NatureScene, a longtime television series on SCETV. His field trips, broadcast nationwide, have earned him a legion of dedicated viewers. Rudy’s knowledge of the complex inner-workings of different ecosystems and his great admiration for the natural world make him the perfect guide. In fact, the National Wildlife Federation and the Garden Club of America honored his commitment to resource conservation with special awards.
