High School Seniors Take on Creativity Challenge
They came, they conquered, and they created! More than 60 prospective students hit the Converse College campus in mid-November for a scholarship competition aimed at attracting academic achievers and creative minds.
The second annual Creative Minds Conference at Converse provided high school seniors with the opportunity for a close-up look at the College’s unique model of creative teaching and learning and an insider’s view of life at Converse. The day-long event included a sampling of interdisciplinary courses, a featured speaker on the subject of creativity, a tour of the campus and a hands-on case study designed to test a variety of the students’ skill sets including, teamwork, problem-solving and innovative thinking.
“It was cool," said one of the visiting seniors. "We had the opportunity to interact with professors on subjects as diverse as the impact of the logging industry on the Northern Spotted Owl, the music of The Beatles, and the combined science of forensics and psychology. From the minute we met President Fleming, I could tell that the approach at Converse is totally student-oriented. What I saw was a school that encouraged out of the box thinking, and an interest in me as an individual.”
“What we know," said Director of Admissions April Lewis, "is that the new millennium requires today’s college graduates to be flexible and adaptable thinkers and doers. Entrepreneurship and the capacity to imagine the unseen and unknown have increasingly become highly valued skills. More than ever before, a greater premium is now placed on an individual’s ability to understand facts and then use judgment, intuition, and creativity to develop solutions.”
According to Lewis, the Creative Minds Conference is a direct outgrowth of Converse’s bold move to infuse creativity throughout a students’ educational experience. With a forward-thinking, institution-wide approach that emphasizes creative thinking, Converse is providing students with a distinctive educational experience.” For more information about scholarship funding available through the Converse Creative Minds Conference, please contact the Converse Office of Admissions at 1-800-766-1125, or via e-mail .
