The MEd in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education is a 30-hour, online program designed to provide a high-quality, targeted degree program for certified teachers to earn their add-on certification in Deaf Education while earning their Master’s Degree.

Our graduate program prepares you to work with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing through coursework that explores pedagogy, advocacy, assistive technology, and various communication modalities.
The Practicum in Instruction and field experiences allow candidates to observe teachers of the deaf and work directly with deaf and hard-of-hearing children in local school districts. During the Practicum in Instruction, you will work one-on-one with a deaf or hard of hearing student on a specific skill. You will evaluate the student’s current skill level for that topic, then craft lessons to help the student improve.
At the end of the semester, candidates will provide a post-assessment and determine the impact their teaching had on the student’s learning. Other field experiences focus on the language and reading development of the deaf and hard of hearing students.
Converse’s Master of Education in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education consists of 30 graduate credits. You will have the opportunity to observe strategies used by in-service teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing in a public school or residential school and to teach one-on-one with a deaf or hard of hearing student. This program includes a 40-hour clinical.
The Master of Education in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education will prepare you to work in non‑profit organizations, advocacy roles, administrative leadership in special education or directly with deaf and hard of hearing children in a classroom setting.
At the completion of the program, graduates will be prepared to take the Praxis Subject Assessment for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students (5272). After passing this exam, candidates can apply for the add-on certification to teach deaf and hard of hearing students. Graduates from other states would have to confirm the specific course requirements for their state for the add-on certification.
