Bio

Dr. Woodfin earned his BA (Phi Beta Kappa) from Baylor University and his MA and PhD from Texas A&M University.  He has won an Excellence in Teaching Award from the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities as well as Converse’s Kathryne Amelia Brown Award for Excellence in Teaching.  He teaches a variety of courses on the history of modern Europe, including his specialty in modern British history and the British Empire. He also teaches Latin American history, a subject to which he has a special connection since living in Viña del Mar, Chile, and the history of the American West. He enjoys working with Converse’s study-abroad program, where he has taken students to London and to a cattle ranch in Wyoming.  He is also interested in historical music and in ways of using the sounds of the past in the classroom.
Dr. Woodfin’s book Camp and Combat on the Sinai and Palestine Front: the Experience of the British Empire Soldier, 1916-18 explains what life was like for World War I soldiers in that part of the Middle East. That project took him all the way around the world, reading letters and diaries in archives from Scotland to New Zealand. As part of the research, he was a Fulbright Fellow for a year at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. Currently, he is writing a biography of an Australian soldier and pilot. (To read more about his book, see "History Professor's Book Explores Lives of Ordinary World War I Soldiers.")

Dr. Woodfin serves as the advisor to Converse students who wish to pursue the Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, or Truman scholarships. Under his guidance, students from Converse have won prestigious Fulbright grants in Europe and the Middle East.  Click on their names to see  stories about them:
