EXHIBITION: Casey Engel: The Trapps
February 1 @ 9:00 am - February 29 @ 5:00 pm
Featured in the latest Milliken Art Gallery exhibition, The Trapps, Asheville artist Casey Engel pays homage to her maternal family name and serves as a metaphorical snare for secrets to hide in plain sight. This immersive exhibition showcases intuitively constructed quilts, hand-built sculptural ceramics that serve as self-portraits, and playful installations that engage with the surrounding environment.
Engel is an interdisciplinary artist primarily working in textiles, printmaking, and ceramics. In 2015, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has worked at various fine art print shops throughout Chicago as well as Western North Carolina; such as, Chicago Printmakers Collaborative, Starshaped Press, the Evanston Art Center, and Starfangled Press. She was the Gallery Manager and a Studio Assistant at Odyssey ClayWorks and has taught there. In March 2023, she was the Visiting Artist at The Bascom Center for Visual Arts and participated in a month-long residency working on ceramics and textiles.
Casey has exhibited throughout Western North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Washington and Chicago, IL. Currently, she works from her home studio in Asheville, NC. In addition to her personal practice, she is the Exhibitions Coordinator at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery.
The Trapps will run from February 1-29, 2024. Engel will present a Gallery Talk on February 1, 2024 at 6:00 pm in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00 pm.
The exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sunday 2:00-5:00 pm, Monday – Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays.
