The Department of Art & Design at Converse College will host a 2020 AP Teacher Institute for Art & Design. The purpose of the Advanced Placement (AP) Teacher Institutes is to provide South Carolina public school teachers with the special endorsement to teach an AP course as required in S.C. Code Ann. Reg. 43-258.1 (2018).
Teachers who successfully complete an AP teacher institute will be awarded special AP endorsement in the specific AP class area.
This grant-funded initiative is open to SC High School Art Teachers. Participants will also be enrolled in EDU 599.01: Advanced Placement Art and Design Institute with 3 Graduate Credit Hours.
The AP Art and Design Summer Institute is a combination of seminar sessions and hands-on studio activities that address the revitalization of the artist/researcher/teacher with an emphasis on contemporary art practice in the high school art room.
Sessions will be provided that explain the AP Art and Design program requirements and portfolio scoring for Drawing, 2-D Design, and 3-D Design submissions, as well as inspiration for developing curricula specific for the three portfolios: Drawing, 2-D Design, and 3-D Design. This institute will prepare teachers to implement the AP class effectively according to College Board requirements, provide a depth of content knowledge in the specific subject area, and provide effective instructional strategies for teaching AP students.
