Professor Bald retired in May 2015.

Professor Bald served Converse from 1982 to 2015 as a teacher of scenic design, lighting design, set construction, theatre history, script analysis, and public speaking. He also supported Theatre Converse as the resident scenic designer and technical director, and for many of his thirty-three years, as the department chair of the Theatre & Dance programs.

Additionally, he served as Technical Director of Twichell Auditorium for ten years, as well as a term as Faculty Senate president. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre from Baldwin-Wallace College, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre design from Brandeis University. He has also taught at the University of St. Thomas and St. Catherine’s University, both in St. Paul, MN. Professor Bald’s career accomplishments include having designed productions for the Spartanburg Little Theatre, Theatre Odyssey, and Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre, among others, as well as leadership roles in the South Carolina Theatre Association, the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, and the Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honors Society.

John continues to offer his valuable insights and expertise to Theatre Converse on occasion, and faithfully attends all Dance Converse and Theatre Converse productions.
