DESCRIPTION:The Converse Creative and Professional Writing program will host award-winning poet\, and MFA in creative writing alumna\, Hannah Marshall on Tuesday\, February 24\, 2026\, at 8:00 PM in Zimmerli Common Room. Marshall will read from her debut book\, Leaf Collection\, winner of the Converse MFA Alumni Book Prize. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. \nHannah Marshall is an award-winning poet who currently lives in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, where she works as a public librarian. Marshall’s poem “This Is a Love Poem to Trees” was selected by former U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith for The Best American Poetry 2021. Marshall’s poems have also appeared in Poetry Daily\, New Ohio Review\, The South Carolina Review\, Atlanta Review\, The Madison Review\, Wisconsin Review\, The American Journal of Poetry\, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Converse University. \nLeaf Collection is published by Clemson University press through the Clemson-Converse Literature Series.

Her work also appears in The Ignatian Literary Magazine\, Entropy\, Prime Number Magazine\, Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel\, Qu Literary Journal\, HeartWood Literary Review\, Bellevue Literary Review\, Steel Toe Review\, Ploughshares Writing Lessons\, Mountain Echoes\, Gambit\, Justus Roux\, Bluestone Review\, and in the anthologies Appalachia (Un)Broken\, Ice Cream Secrets\, Appalachia’s Last Stand\, and Mountain Voices. Rhonda has an MFA in Creative Writing Fiction from Converse University in Spartanburg\, SC and was awarded the Watson Fellowship and a Standiford Scholarship from Eckerd College’s Writers in Paradise. She lives in Hickory\, NC. \nSusan Tekulve’s newest book\, Bodies of Light\, is her first full-length poetry collection. She is the author of Second Shift: Essays (Del Sol Press) and In the Garden of Stone (Hub City Press)\, winner of the South Carolina Novel Prize and a Gold IPPY Award. She’s also published two short story collections: Savage Pilgrims (Serving House Books) and My Mother’s War Stories (Winnow Press). Her nonfiction\, fiction\, and poetry appeared in journals such as Denver Quarterly\, Indiana Review\, The Georgia Review\, Connecticut Review\, The Louisville Review\, Puerto del Sol\, New Letters\, and Shenandoah. Her web chapbook\, Wash Day\, appears in the Web Del Sol International Chapbook Series. She has received scholarships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. Free and open to the public. \nTyree Daye was raised in Youngsville\, North Carolina. He is the author of the poetry collections A Little Bump in the Earth (Copper Canyon Press\, 2024)\, Cardinal (Copper Canyon Press\, 2020)\, and River Hymns (American Poetry Review\, 2017)\, winner of the APR/Honickman First Book Prize. A Cave Canem fellow and a Palm Beach Poetry Festival Langston Hughes Fellow\, Daye is the recipient of a Whiting Writers Award\, a Kate Tufts Award finalist\, and a 2021 Paterson Prize finalist. He was the 2019 Diana and Simon Raab Writer-In-Residence at the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and received an Amy Clampitt Residency. Daye is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill and a core faculty member in the Converse Low Residency MFA. DESCRIPTION:Leslie Pietrzyk\nThe BFA Creative and Professional Writing program is pleased to announce a reading by novelist and story writer Leslie Pietrzyk on October 24 at 8:00 p.m.\, in Zimmerli Common Room. The event is free and open to the public. \nLeslie Pietryzk’s\, first collection of short stories\, This Angel on My Chest\, won the 2015 Drue Heinz Literature Prize and was published by University of Pittsburgh Press. Pietrzyk\, a novelist and short story writer\, has published multiple award-winning books\, including her most recent book\, a collection of linked short stories set in Washington\, DC\, Admit This to No One\, which was published in late 2021 to critical acclaim. Her previous novel\, Silver Girl\, published in 2018\, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly. In addition\, she is the author of the two novels\, Pears on a Willow Tree (Avon) and A Year and a Day (William Morrow). Her award-winning short fiction and essays have appeared in\, among others\, Ploughshares\, Story Magazine\, The Hudson Review\, Southern Review\, Arts & Letters\, Shenandoah\, The Gettysburg Review\, The Iowa Review\, Washingtonian\, The Sun\, Salon\, New England Review\, River Styx\, Hobart\, Midwestern Gothic\, Cincinnati Review\, and The Washington Post Magazine. The event is free and open to the public. \nDustin Brookshire (he/him) is the author of the chapbooks Never Picked First For Playtime (Harbor Editions\, 2023)\, Love Most Of You Too (Harbor Editions\, 2021)\, and To The One Who Raped Me (Sibling Rivalry Press\, 2012). His poetry has been featured on NPR and other radio stations as well as in Georgia Poetry in the Parks and earned him Pushcart and Best of the Net Nominations. He’s the co-editor of Let Me Say This: A Dolly Parton Poetry Anthology (Madville Publishing\, 2023)\, co-editor of a forthcoming forms anthology from Harbor Anthologies\, and editor of the forthcoming chapbook anthology When I Was Straight. She received a Governor’s Award from South Carolina Humanities and the New Southern Voices in Poetry Prize from Hub City Press. She is currently completing her MFA thesis in the Converse Low Residency MFA.

SUMMARY:Robert Olmstead: Sara Lura Mathews Self Writer-in-Residence Reading
DESCRIPTION:The Creative and Professional Writing Program is excited to host award-winning novelist Robert Olmstead for a reading on September 20 at 8:00 p.m. in Zimmerli Common Room\, Howard Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Contact Prof. Rick Mulkey with questions. \nRobert Olmstead is the author of nine books\, including Savage Country which was published by Algonquin\, and was an Amazon “Best Book of October 2017.” Other recent award-winning novels include The Coldest Night\, and Coal Black Horse published by Algonquin Books. He also has published a textbook for fiction-writing workshops (“Elements of the Craft”) and a non-fiction memoir (“Stay Here with Me: A Memoir”)\, plus numerous individual stories and essays in some of our nation’s finest magazines. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship and an NEA grant. He has taught in numerous colleges\, universities and writing workshops\, including Dickinson College\, UC Irvine\, Boise State University and the Summer Literary Seminars in St. Petersburg\, Russia. His novel Far Bright Star is in the early stages of production as a feature film directed by Casey Affleck and adapted for the screen by Damien Ober. \nOlmstead is a core faculty member in the Converse Low Residency MFA program\, and he is visiting campus for a month in Fall 2022 as the Sara Lura Mathews Self Writer-in-Residence\, and is teaching an Advanced Tutorial Fiction course.
