SUMMARY:2021 Spartanburg Festival Chorus Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Spartanburg Festival Chorus\, under the direction of Dr. Keith Jones\, will present its spring concert on Thursday\, April 22nd at 7:30 pm in Twichell Auditorium. The group will be accompanied on piano by Julie Smith and on organ by Dr. Brennan Szafron. Featured soloists will include oboist\, Dr. Kelly Vaneman\, and soprano\, Anna Neely. \nThe eight choral works represented on the program provide encouraging texts and soothing music in a time of pandemic. The program opens with Felix Mendelssohn’s extended anthem\, Hear My Prayer\, whose lyrics are based on Psalm 55. The remaining pieces of the program are excerpts from some of music history‘s greatest composers and most significant requiems. Composers represented include Vierne\, Brahms\, Durufle\, Faure\, and Rutter.

Traditionally\, this event would feature a stage filled with members of the Spartanburg Festival Chorus\, Converse Wind Ensemble\, Converse Chamber Singers\, and Converse Choral\, who would perform beloved traditional songs between student readings. \nLike many things this year\, we’ve had to adjust but Lessons and Carols\, while slightly different\, will remain a part of Converse’s holiday traditions. In lieu of hosting this event in person\, Converse is recording a modified version of Festival of Lessons and Carols. This shortened celebration will include music and select verses of the Christmas story. The video will be shared in December with alumni and friends via email and will also be posted to the Converse website.
