Naina Dewan is a Dance Educator, Choreographer, and Certified Alexander Technique Teacher. India-born and U.S.-raised, Naina has been studying Dance Arts since 1983. Her undergraduate studies were at State University of New York/Geneseo, University of Rochester, and Jacob’s Pillow. She earned a B.A. in Psychology with a concentration in Dance. Her graduate studies were at American Center for Alexander Technique & New York University.
She has performed with Albany Berkshire Ballet, Marya Kennett Ballet Theatre, Geneseo Dance Ensemble, Sharon Fogarty Dance Theatre, NYC choreographers Diane Young, Emily Faulkner, Jody Sperling (TimeLapse Dance), Creatures of Habitat/Stefanie Weber, and at various dance festivals in the Northeast.
Naina has taught extensively in Massachusetts at Barrington Stage Company and Berkshire Dance Theatre, as well as in South Carolina at Carolina Ballet Theatre, Greenville Health System Life Center, DanceArts Greenville, Fine Arts Center, SC Governor's School for Arts & Humanities, and International Ballet Academy. She has guest taught at the State University of New York/Geneseo, University of Colorado/Boulder, Northwood Academy (Toronto), Helping Hands Psychotherapy (VT), and Foothills Dance Conservatory (SC).
Her choreography is fueled by abstract narratives of the human condition. In 2013, she started Naina Dewan Dance Company which creates, commissions, and performs modern dance on diverse landscapes. NDC has performed at Clemson University, Front Porch Arts Collective Festival, Senior Action, Greenville Dance Festival, International Ballet's Chamber Concert, Furman University, Tedx Greenville, Our World Festival, Savannah College of Art & Design, Sterling School, Solutions Recovery Center "Recovery 2016" Benefit, Converse College, Artisphere Festival, and with Danza Corpus Canada (Toronto).
Naina joined Converse College as an Adjunct Dance Instructor for the 2015-2016 academic year, and was the Director of Dance Converse's production of "home/body" in the spring of 2016. She is very happy to be joining Converse's community on a full-time basis as an Assistant Professor of Dance in the 2016-2017 academic year.
