DESCRIPTION:This exhibition has been postponed. \nGreene (b.1997)\, a South Carolina-based artist\, started working professionally in 2021 after earning his Bachelor in Psychology from Coastal Carolina University in 2019. His latest work will be featured in Stories About My Brothers in the Milliken Art Gallery beginning February 6\, 2025. These depictions\, which give the viewer an intimate and sympathetic look into the lives of people who might not look like themselves\, show how art has the power to speak to all people.”\n \n“This exhibition catalyzes a dialogue regarding young black men who are either going through adolescence or exhibiting the scars from their survival.” \nGreene is a self-taught artist whose development of his painterly style has been aided by media such as manga and animation. By connecting himself to the numerous facets of historical\, political\, and popular culture\, he hopes to capture an intimate personal narrative through his art\, enabling him to reveal his truth. His art conveys a narrative of his life\, his aspirations\, and the minute details that influence his perception of reality.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: 'Payne'-ful Business\, Charleston's Journey to Truth
DESCRIPTION:In ‘Payne-ful’ Business\, Charleston’s Journey to Truth in the Milliken Art Gallery\, John W. Jones\, legacy preservationist and acclaimed artist\, presents a powerful series of more than 30 paintings of the enslaved in the antebellum period. The work draws on the historical research of Margaret Seidler\, fourth great-granddaughter of domestic slave trading auctioneer William Payne\, and references descriptive text gleaned from newspaper advertisements from that time in history. \nThe artist takes Payne’s newspaper ads offering for-sale blacksmiths\, cooks\, child nurses\, brick masons and dozens of other talents\, and transforms their trades\, skills\, and labors into a compelling visual narrative of the pervasiveness and magnitude of the contributions of the enslaved. Seidler’s book\, ‘Payne-ful’ Business\, Charleston’s Journey to Truth\, incorporates Jones’ compelling images in support of her historical interpretations of her recently discovered ancestors. \nBorn May 11\, 1950\, in Columbia\, SC\, John W. Jones has been a freelance artist and illustrator for more than 25 years\, and uses oils\, acrylics\, and watercolors for his painting. Jones’ goal is to paint the African American experience beginning with the slave trade in Africa and extending through the Middle Passage and pre-Civil War era\, and to contrast it with the experience of African Americans today. \nJones has received several awards\, including merit awards for his works in the 1998 and 1999 Piccolo Spoleto Festival Art Show. Jones\, who graduated from high school in 1968 and is self-taught\, has been drawing since early childhood. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970\, Jones served in the Vietnam War and took illustration classes in military school. Additionally\, Jones has lectured widely as an artist\, activist\, and motivational speaker at various universities and colleges\, conferences\, and corporate events. \n‘Payne-ful’ Business\, Charleston’s Journey to Truth will run from October 17-31\, 2024. \nJones and Seidler will present a Gallery Talk in the gallery followed by a reception on October 17.. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sunday 2:00-5:00 pm\, Monday – Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays.

DESCRIPTION:Ian Curcio is based in Greenville\, South Carolina\, and specializes in advertising\, corporate\, and documentary projects featuring everyday people doing everyday things. His latest work will be featured in Third Coast in the Milliken Art Gallery beginning August 22\, 2024. \nSpeaking of this body of work\, Curcio states\, “I created these photographs in and around the Gulf Coast between 2013 and 2023. Equipped with a single fixed-lens rangefinder\, I rode shotgun with a swamp native\, who led me through the landscapes they’ve intimately known for more than four decades. I embraced a minimalist approach\, drawing from my earlier work as a photojournalist.” \nCurcio lived a peripatetic childhood\, attending grade school across the United States\, Central Europe\, and Southeast Asia. This early exposure to diverse cultures\, mixed values\, and rapid change fueled his curiosity and continues influencing the work he creates today. Curcio has published two books with Hub City Press. His recent clients include the American Red Cross\, AnMed Health\, Bank of America\, BASF\, Cargo\, Clemson University\, Dartmouth College\, Discovery\, Explore Asheville Tourism\, Jaguar\, Land Rover\, Lenovo\, Marriott\, Michelin\, Riggs\, The Rotarian\, UPS\, and Yamaha. \nThird Coast will run from August 22-September 26\, 2024. \nCurcio will present a Gallery Talk on September 5\, 2024\, at 6:00 pm in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00 pm \nThe exhibition is free of charge and located in the Milliken Art Gallery. SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Contraptions
DESCRIPTION:Asheville artist Kathryn B. Phillips has always challenged her surroundings. Her art mimics her life: by letting go of others’ expectations\, as well as her own\, Phillips has found harmony in the constant struggle to nurture freedom while still respecting the boundaries of good design. Her latest work will be featured in Contraptions in the Milliken Art Gallery. \nPhillips grew up in Eudora\, Arkansas\, exploring the wooded banks of the Mississippi River\, collecting treasures from nature that very often became small vignettes in her family’s home. Her mother fostered in her the love of visual beauty\, by transforming their gardens with her natural sense of design. Phillips was encouraged to participate in private art classes at a young age\, and she eventually majored in Fine Art at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. \nFollowing her formal education\, Phillips received further inspiration and tremendous encouragement from M. Douglas Walton. Waltons’ two-week intensive Watercolor Encounter courses allowed her the freedom to experiment and to explore the medium further. Phillips has worked to promote art in underserved communities and has taught and attended workshops on composition and painting techniques. \nSince 1975\, Phillips has participated in multiple juried exhibitions\, as well as numerous group and solo shows\, and has been featured in several interior design articles. \nContraptions will run from January 4-25\, 2024. Phillips will present a Gallery Talk on January 11\, 2024\, at 6:00 pm in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00 pm. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sunday 2:00-5:00 pm\, Monday – Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays. \nArtist’s website: http://www.kathrynbphillips.com/

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: And the Grass Still Grows by Adrian Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Raised in Hartsville\, SC\, Adrian Rhodes is a prolific artist whose printwork pieces focus on repeating imagery and feature interspersed 2D and 3D elements. “Combining textile and print\, I am interested in how repetition of imagery reflects recurring thought patterns and an unwillingness to move on. Print becomes a method for creating structure. This framework\, indulging a desire for order\, creates space for disruption\,” states Rhodes. Her latest work\, And the Grass Still Grows\, will be featured in the Milliken Art Gallery. \nRhodes received her BFA in 2005 and MFA in 2011\, both from Winthrop University. She is the recipient of the South Carolina Arts Commission’s 2020 Individual Artist’s Fellowship and the 2019 SECAC Artist’s Fellowship. Her work has been included in highly competitive group exhibitions at museums and contemporary art institutions. “Drawn: Concept and Craft” at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston Salem presented her work alongside artists including LeRoy Neiman\, Kara Walker\, Kiki Smith\, and Sarah Sze. “Paper Worlds” at the Spartanburg Art Museum exhibited her work with eight other artists who\, according to the curatorial statement\, “push the boundaries and capabilities of paper.” She was included in 2019’s inaugural “Coined in the South” at the Mint Museum Uptown Charlotte\, a survey of groundbreaking contemporary southern art. Manifest Gallery included her work in the exhibition “CUT: Works Made by or About Cutting” in 2021. She is the winner of the 2020 701 CCA Prize from the 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia\, SC\, and was featured in presentations of the 701 CCA SC Biennial in 2019 and 2021. She presented three solo exhibitions in 2022/23\, including “How to Untie a Tight Knot” at 701 CCA\, “Never Mind All That” at the University of Montevallo\, and “After the Ravens” at the Spartanburg Art Museum. \nAnd the Grass Still Grows will run from September 28 to October 26\, 2023. Rhodes will present a Gallery Talk on September 28th at 6:00 pm in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00pm. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Inspired by the rich\, high contrast illustrations found in illuminated texts\, graphic novels\, and children’s fairy tales\, the often-whimsical imagery and characters that I create are meant to provoke a sense of nostalgia and familiarity within the viewer\,” states Alexander. \nChloe Alexander is a printmaker who lives and works in Atlanta\, Georgia. Her most recent work focuses on creating visual narratives by layering various printmaking techniques to create one-of-a-kind\, mixed-media drawings. Chloe obtained her BFA in Printmaking in 2010 and an M.Ed. in 2014\, both from Georgia State University. She has exhibited widely\, including Kai Lin Art Gallery in Atlanta\, the International Print Center in New York\, and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in London. Chloe has also been awarded numerous awards\, grants and fellowships\, including a two-year fellowship with The Creatives Project in Atlanta and the Parent Artist Award at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley\, CA. \nCONSTRUCT & ASSEMBLE will run from February 2-March 2\, 2023. Alexander will present a gallery talk on February 2\, 2023 at 6:00 pm in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00 pm. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sunday 2:00-5:00pm\, Monday – Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays. \nArtist Website \nFeatrued image: I didn’t Recognize You\, You Changed Your Hair | Silkscreen on BFK Rives paper | 20 x 20″

SUMMARY:GALLERY TALK & RECEPTION: Ostentatious Affiliation
DESCRIPTION:Ostentatious Affliction will feature the latest work from J.B. Burke in the Milliken Art Gallery. Burke’s drawings express the language of excess and consequence. “We interact with food intimately- we consume it\, we digest it\, and we internalize it in multiple senses. Food defines ordinary life and special occasions alike. It can create pleasure and provoke shame. It becomes a vehicle for stories that investigate the body\, identity\, gender\, community\, the domestic\, the sacramental\, economics\, politics\, and the environment. These drawings use the saccharine sweet colors of carnival cotton candy to underscore the implied threat\,” states Burke. \nBorn in Wichita\, Kansas\, Jessica Burke (J.B.) is a figurative artist and educator that earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She is an Associate Professor of Art and Foundations Coordinator at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As an artist working in both traditional and digital drawing media\, she is interested in the effect of popular culture on identity. Her drawings have been published in highly selective contemporary art publications that include Manifest’s International Drawing Annual (INDA) 13 and in North Light Book’s Strokes of Genius 9: The Best of Drawing. She will also have work published in the 2nd Edition of the textbook\, Art for Everyone by University Press in January 2022. \nBurke will present a Gallery Talk on January 26th at 6:00 pm in the gallery\, followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00 pm. \nOstentatious Affliction will run from January 5-26\, 2023. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Future Nature / Content Aware
DESCRIPTION:Image: Untitled from the Future Nature / Content Aware Series Archival inkjet prints on Japanese paper 17″ x 69″\nFuture Nature / Content Aware will feature the latest work from photographer Aspen Hochhalter in the Milliken Art Gallery. This series explores how computers\, and specifically the Photoshop content-aware algorithm\, interprets and reconstructs partial panoramic photographs to give us a glimpse into a digital “vision.” “These photographs were intentionally taken in such a way to emphasize and exaggerate digital artifacts. In addition\, large sections of the panoramics were blank and the computer was tasked to fill in the missing information with its approximation of “nature.” The resulting images are composite landscapes of digital fragmentation\, disruption\, pattern glitches\, and digital imperfections created by the computer in attempts to reconstruct the missing content.\,” states Hochhalter. The images are “documents of hybrid seeing–a collaborative vision of nature through the photographic lens\, with a human at the helm and a computer algorithm completing the picture.” \nAspen Hochhalter was born and raised in Chipita Park\, Colorado. She received her Masters of Fine Arts in Photo Based Media at East Carolina University in Greenville\, North Carolina and her BFA in Photography from Creighton University in Omaha\, Nebraska. She is an Associate Professor of Art and the Photography Area Coordinator in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of North Carolina\, Charlotte. Her work explores the crossover between digital technologies\, historic processes and the use of experimental materials through appropriation\, self-portraiture\, and collaborative projects. Recent accomplishments include work published in The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes: 3rd Edition\, Focal Plane Magazine\, and Lenscratch Blog; a McColl Center for Art + Innovation Residency\, exhibits at Castell Photography Gallery\, East Carolina University\, Kiernan Gallery\, The Light Factory\, and many other venues across the country. \nFuture Nature / Content Aware will run from October 27-November 22\, 2022. Hochhalter will present a Gallery Talk on October 27th at 6:00pm in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00pm. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sunday 2:00-5:00pm\, Monday – Friday 9:00am-5:00pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays. \nArtist’s Website \nClick here for gallery talk and reception details.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Who I was\, who we are
DESCRIPTION:Who I was\, who we are will feature the latest work from Yvette L. Cummings in the Milliken Art Gallery. Cummings’s work explores the complicated path of youth\, beauty and femininity as expressed through the viewpoint of a sexual abuse survivor. “I am interested in the way female bodies are not autonomous; whether the victim of sexual assault or the governments constant regulation\, ownership of my body is not my own. I want to exert power back to the body\, regardless of gesture or appearance\,” states Cummings. Her paintings will challenge the viewer to move beyond adult experiences and remember the innocence of children. \nImage: Mother Don’t Worry | Oil on Canvas | 60 x 60″\nCummings is currently an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts in Painting/Drawing at Coastal Carolina University in Conway\, South Carolina. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design\, Art\, Architecture\, and Planning. Her work can be found in both public and private collections and has been exhibited in multiple group and solo exhibitions throughout the south and mid-west of the United States as well as internationally. Cummings has been featured in the 701 Center for Contemporary Art South Carolina Biennial 2015 and 2019 in Columbia\, SC\, winner of the 2016 701 CCA Prize for artist under 40 in South Carolina\, as well as Contemporary South at Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh\, NC. She was one of 65 artists chosen for The Mint Museum’s Coined in the South Exhibition 2019.
