Professor Named as Chair of Business and Economics Department
Beginning February 18, Dr. Madelyn V. Young will begin her duties as Chair of the Economics and Business Department at Converse College. Dr. Young has been a member of the Converse economics faculty since 1991. Her research interests are in the areas of labor and urban economics.
“We are pleased to have Dr. Young assume responsibility for the Department of Economics and Business,” said Joe Ann Lever, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Converse. “Over the last several years, she has conducted study/travel programs to Finland, Russia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, England and Italy. She also participated in a Rotarian Group Study Exchange to Brazil, and received a Malone Fellowship from the National Council on US/Arab Relations to visit Saudi Arabia.”
Dr. Young, a South Bend, Indiana native, received her Ph.D. in Economics from Georgia State University, her MA in Economics from the University of Notre Dame, and her BA in Economics and English (Writing) from Indiana University at South Bend. She won two teaching awards as a graduate student at Georgia State University and the annual “Excellence in Writing” Award at Indiana University at South Bend. Her publications include “Interfirm Wage Differential in a Local Labor Market: The Case of Fast-Food Workers” (Journal of Labor Research, Summer 1997), and “The Spatial Distribution of Black Employment Between the Central City and the Suburbs” (Economic Inquiry, October 1996).
