Ms. Teresa Strait is a Middle Level English Teacher at Spartanburg Day School and a Converse College graduate of the MAT program in Secondary English. She has experience teaching middle level and secondary English in schools in Greenville Country and Spartanburg County.
If you have an independent reading program of any sort, it will definitely involve minutes and days of just reading. Many times, it’s wise to spice things up as well as give your students a chance to stand up for and share what they are reading. With in-class book battles, I use the season of basketball brackets to liven up class and let my students teach. In my presentation, I will share example brackets, photos, our rubric, and book lists. This activity, which takes place over multiple class periods, requires students to research, create, present, persuade, and cast their vote. It has evolved over the years I’ve been doing it to become quite well organized, fair, productive, and engaging.
