SUMMARY:Rakish + Nate Sabat: A Guest Artist Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Petrie School of Music’s Guest Artist Series presents Rakish + Nate Sabat in Concert. \nIn addition to their concert\, Rakish and Nate Sabat will also be giving a masterclass on Saturday\, October 12\, 2024\, from 10-12 PM in Daniel Recital Hall. \nAll are welcome to attend free of charge. \nAbout Rakish: \nViolinist Maura Shawn Scanlin and guitarist Conor Hearn unite to form “Rakish.” The pair gets their namesake from the traditional Irish tune Rakish Paddy\, an origin that aptly suits the duo and their shared background in traditional Irish and Scottish music. Yet “rakish” itself also suggests something strikingly unconventional in its appearance\, and Maura and Conor knowingly embrace this wealth of connotation in their music\, drawing on the music they grew up with and performing it with their own slant. In a performance that toes the line between concert music and session music\, Rakish explores tunes and songs from Irish and American folk traditions in a way that reflects their shared interest in and love for old traditional tunes and chamber music. Maura Shawn\, a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition\, wields the technical range of a classical violinist and the deep sensitivity of a traditional musician. Conor\, a native to the Irish music communities of Washington\, D.C. and Baltimore\, MD\, makes his home in Boston\, MA playing and teaching guitar. As a duo they have performed at venues and festivals across North America\, and can be found teaching at fiddle camps across the country. \nAbout Nate Sabat: \nNate Sabat is an award-winning bassist\, singer-songwriter and arranger based in Brooklyn\, NY. Nate has written and arranged music for NPR’s Radiolab\, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and the Heifetz International Music Institute. Additionally\, a number of his songs are in rotation on Sirius XM’s Bluegrass Junction channel. He has performed on stages throughout Europe\, Japan\, New Zealand\, Australia\, Canada and the United States\, at festivals and venues including Celtic Connections\, Savannah Music Festival\, The Caverns and Carnegie Hall. In April 2024 Nate released Bass Fiddler\, the debut full-length project under his own name\, produced by the legendary Bruce Molsky. \nWith upright bass as his sole tool for accompaniment\, Nate crafts wildly intricate arrangements\, each one inextricably tied to its song. His playing — while rooted in American folk music — goes far beyond any preconceived notions of the instrument’s role within the genre. With a relaxed\, vocal sound and equal fluency with pizzicato and the bow\, Nate takes full advantage of the never-ending variety of sounds and textures the bass has to offer. GRAMMY-winning cellist Eugene Friesen says\, “Nate has so much going for him: The ability to propel any groove with chops and subtlety\, a sweet bow sound that can vocalize any melody\, fiercely great intonation\, and\, most importantly\, a musical intelligence and intuition that operates with a constant smile.” \nCheck out Nate’s “The Sun Will Rise.” \nCheck out Rakish’s Live Show Trailer:

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: 'Payne'-ful Business\, Charleston's Journey to Truth
DESCRIPTION:In ‘Payne-ful’ Business\, Charleston’s Journey to Truth in the Milliken Art Gallery\, John W. Jones\, legacy preservationist and acclaimed artist\, presents a powerful series of more than 30 paintings of the enslaved in the antebellum period. The work draws on the historical research of Margaret Seidler\, fourth great-granddaughter of domestic slave trading auctioneer William Payne\, and references descriptive text gleaned from newspaper advertisements from that time in history. \nThe artist takes Payne’s newspaper ads offering for-sale blacksmiths\, cooks\, child nurses\, brick masons and dozens of other talents\, and transforms their trades\, skills\, and labors into a compelling visual narrative of the pervasiveness and magnitude of the contributions of the enslaved. Seidler’s book\, ‘Payne-ful’ Business\, Charleston’s Journey to Truth\, incorporates Jones’ compelling images in support of her historical interpretations of her recently discovered ancestors. \nBorn May 11\, 1950\, in Columbia\, SC\, John W. Jones has been a freelance artist and illustrator for more than 25 years\, and uses oils\, acrylics\, and watercolors for his painting. Jones’ goal is to paint the African American experience beginning with the slave trade in Africa and extending through the Middle Passage and pre-Civil War era\, and to contrast it with the experience of African Americans today. \nJones has received several awards\, including merit awards for his works in the 1998 and 1999 Piccolo Spoleto Festival Art Show. Jones\, who graduated from high school in 1968 and is self-taught\, has been drawing since early childhood. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970\, Jones served in the Vietnam War and took illustration classes in military school. Additionally\, Jones has lectured widely as an artist\, activist\, and motivational speaker at various universities and colleges\, conferences\, and corporate events. \n‘Payne-ful’ Business\, Charleston’s Journey to Truth will run from October 17-31\, 2024. \nJones and Seidler will present a Gallery Talk in the gallery followed by a reception on October 17.. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sunday 2:00-5:00 pm\, Monday – Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays.
