DESCRIPTION:Image: Float | Mixed Media (Monoprint\,wood block\, lithograph\, screen print\, graphite\, acetate\, and gold leaf) | 26 x 39″\nRaised in East Tennessee\, Libby McFalls’s love of storytelling began during her childhood through attendance at the National Storytelling Festival. Her love and appreciation of oral storytelling increased over time\, emphasized by the summers she and her sisters spent among extended family of five living generations. She creates nonlinear visual narratives that examine issues of loss and family. She also holds the position of VP of Communications for Foundations of Art: Theory & Education. McFalls’s work has been exhibited in national and international locations\, including the Athica Athens Institute\, South Bay Contemporary (Los Angeles)\, SoLA Gallery\, Kai Lin Art Gallery\, and Gallery 1 in Edinburgh\, Scotland. \nStorytelling will run from August 25-September 22\, 2022. McFalls will present a Gallery Talk on September 1st at 6:00pm in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00pm. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sunday 2:00-5:00pm\, Monday – Friday 9:00am-5:00pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays. \nArtist’s Website \nClick here for the gallery talk and reception details.

SUMMARY:Spartanburg Philharmonic: Scheherazade & Other Tales
DESCRIPTION:Part of Spartanburg Philharmonic’s Zimmerli Series \nBrilliantly Imaginistic and Enchanting. \nAll music tells a story\, sometimes one inspired by familiar myths and legends that are bigger than life and full of mystery and drama. In this program\, guest conductor Antoine Clark takes us on a fantastic musical adventure of the imagination\, beginning with Anna Clyne’s rich and visually stunning In This Midnight Hour. GRAMMY-award winning soloist Kenneth Overton’s opulent baritone brings Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer to life with a vibrant\, tuneful telling of the hero’s emotions. Finally\, we journey to a faraway land as Rimsky-Korsakov weaves a boldly rich tale of the exotic and persuasive Scheherazade. Truly a night of music not soon forgotten. \nFull Concert Program: \n\nAnna Clyne\, This Midnight Hour\nGustav Mahler\, Lieder eines fahrenden Gessellen\nRimsky-Korsakov\, Scheherazade\n\nSpartanburg Philharmonic is a Preferred Partner of Converse University

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Who I was\, who we are
DESCRIPTION:Who I was\, who we are will feature the latest work from Yvette L. Cummings in the Milliken Art Gallery. Cummings’s work explores the complicated path of youth\, beauty and femininity as expressed through the viewpoint of a sexual abuse survivor. “I am interested in the way female bodies are not autonomous; whether the victim of sexual assault or the governments constant regulation\, ownership of my body is not my own. I want to exert power back to the body\, regardless of gesture or appearance\,” states Cummings. Her paintings will challenge the viewer to move beyond adult experiences and remember the innocence of children. \nImage: Mother Don’t Worry | Oil on Canvas | 60 x 60″\nCummings is currently an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts in Painting/Drawing at Coastal Carolina University in Conway\, South Carolina. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design\, Art\, Architecture\, and Planning. Her work can be found in both public and private collections and has been exhibited in multiple group and solo exhibitions throughout the south and mid-west of the United States as well as internationally. Cummings has been featured in the 701 Center for Contemporary Art South Carolina Biennial 2015 and 2019 in Columbia\, SC\, winner of the 2016 701 CCA Prize for artist under 40 in South Carolina\, as well as Contemporary South at Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh\, NC.
