SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: David Zacharias's Visual Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:With over 50 years of dedicated art-making\, David Zacharias’s Visual Memoirs will include numerous investigations or bodies of work\, in various categories and media in the Milliken Art Gallery. Zacharias will exhibit paintings\, sculptures and ceramics in an exhibition that is not technically a retrospective. Four installations\, in their own space\, will feature Visual Memoirs with some pieces in installations completed in the early 70s into the mid 80s and early 90s. Throughout the gallery are lacquer base enamel paintings on masonite from the 80s\, that were chronologically followed by a series of stainless steel sculptures\, paintings on canvas from 2012 to present and an array of investigations in clay\, some of which are ongoing. \nDavid Zacharias’s first major was Pre-Veterinary Medicine at Clemson University in 1968. Changing to Studio Art resulted in transferring to the University of South Carolina-Columbia\, completing a BFA and later an MFA\, both with concentrations in sculpture and ceramics. In the 1970s\, Converse College offered a full-time position teaching all levels of undergraduate ceramics and other subjects. Zacharias’s art production has been steady in addition to his exhibition schedule with 23 one-person exhibitions\, over 100 group exhibitions and over 70 juried competitions. Produced work has been in paintings\, sculptures\, ceramics\, installations\, and performance art. \nDavid Zacharias’s Visual Memoirs will run from November 5-30\, 2020. Zacharias will present an online discussion and Gallery Talk in November. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sundays from 2-5 pm\, Monday through Friday from 9 am-5 pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays.

DESCRIPTION:Against considerable odds\, Converse Chorale\, Converse College’s premiere women’s chorus\, will be live-streaming its Fall concert from Twichell Auditorium on Thursday\, November 5\, at 7:30 pm. \nConverse Chorale presents Ecstasy and Agony\,” a theme that pretty much chose itself “when the college is in the middle of a worldwide pandemic\,” says Professor of Music and Chorale director\, Dr. Keith Jones. The Ecstasy and Agony texts contrast the joy of singing\, the power of resilience and resolve\, and the fearlessness of youth. Paired with the sobering words of The New Colossus\, the heartfelt loss expressed in an Appalachian folk song\, and the penitential words of Psalm 130: “Out of the depths I cry to the\, O Lord\,” this program\, fittingly\, expresses wide-ranging emotions and musical styles.

SUMMARY:Livestream: Spartanburg Festival Chorus presents "From Darkness to Light"
DESCRIPTION:The Spartanburg Festival Chorus\, under the direction of Keith Jones will be live streaming their fall concert from Twichell Auditorium on Thursday\, November 12\, at 7:30 pm. \nThe theme of the concert\, From Darkness to Light\, came naturally from the trying times in which we find ourselves\, and the concert repertory speaks to our time. “A community chorus member\, Dr. Al Jeter\, suggested the title at our last rehearsal\, and it stuck\,” said Dr. Jones. “Similar to the recent concert by Converse Chorale\, SFC members will sing texts that resonate with the despair of our times\, but they also will present texts that celebrate resiliency\, optimism\, and faith. The From Darkness to Light program will feature iconic texts like Kyrie eleison\, Psalm 130 (Out of the depths I cry to the\, O Lord…)\, and Psalm 102 (Hear my prayer\, O Lord\, and left my cry come unto thee). We also have included a number of less familiar texts from late Renaissance madrigal and verse anthem composers like Thomas Weelkes and Orlando Gibbons. True to the theme of the program\, the eleven choral selections move the listener from a place of emotional darkness to one of light\, culminating in miniature masterpieces. \nView the program here.
