SUMMARY:Converse Tent at the 2021 Spartanburg Criterium
DESCRIPTION:Join Converse alumni\, faculty\, staff\, students\, coaches and friends in downtown Spartanburg for the Spartanburg Criterium Bike Race. Converse will again have a tailgate tent – it’s B46 on the Library side of the track on the corner of Broad Street and Church Street.  Water and snacks will be available for the guests\, as well as beer and wine for those 21 and older (please show ID) as long as it lasts. The Converse tent is located on the library side of the race at the corner of Broad and Church Street. The best parking to access the tent easily will be in the Kennedy Street parking garage.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Refugium
DESCRIPTION:Christina Laurel is a paper artist creating installations and two-dimensional art\, all with a Japanese aesthetic. Her latest work will be featured in Refugium in the Milliken Art Gallery. Laurel’s mission is to create an “exhale” moment\, an oasis that offers a respite and refuge from our daily sensory overload. Suspended lace panels support a migrating pattern of butterflies that cast shadows and respond to air movement. \nLaurel originally studied fashion design at Cornell University\, then fine art at the University of Maryland and SUNY Brockport\, earning a BS in Studio Art in 2009. Her “Refugium” installation was developed during several artist residencies: 2017\, ArtRez\, Newnan\, GA; 2016\, Virginia Center for Creative Arts\, Amherst\, VA; 2015\, Hambidge Center for Creative Arts\, Rabun Gap\, GA; and 2014\, Paducah Arts Alliance\, Paducah\, KY. She has participated in a multitude of solo\, duo and group exhibitions in galleries\, museums and venues in South Carolina\, North Carolina\, New York\, Kentucky and Georgia. She now resides in Liberty\, South Carolina. \nRefugium will run from August 26-September 23\, 2021. Laurel will present a Gallery Talk on September 2nd at 6:00pm in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00pm. \nThe exhibition is located in the Milliken Art Gallery and is free of charge. Gallery hours are Sunday 2:00-5:00pm\, Monday – Friday 9:00am-5:00pm. The Gallery is closed during school holidays.

SUMMARY:A Celebration of President Jeffrey H. Barker's Life and Legacy
DESCRIPTION:A campus-wide memorial to celebrate Dr. Barker’s life and legacy will take place on Friday\, August 27\, 2021 at 1:00 pm in Twichell Auditorium in the Zimmerli Performance Center on the Converse University campus in Spartanburg\, South Carolina. \nWatch the memorial slideshow. \nConverse classes will be canceled from noon to 3 pm on August 27\, 2021 to allow for students\, faculty\, and staff to attend. \nIn lieu of flowers\, the Jeffrey H. Barker Memorial Fund has been set up to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Barker. Donations will be applied to a project to be named at a later date.
