Converse Mortar Board Chapter Receives National Award
It has been said that everybody has a price. Armed with that knowledge, the Converse College Mortar Board Gavel Chapter has created a most ingenious way to raise funds. It is called the Faculty Auction.
Instead of offering rare collectibles for auction, various Converse faculty members offer their talents to the highest student bidder. For a price, the professor may take care of the student’s laundry, cook a gourmet meal, or take the student for a nature walk.
The imaginative project caught the eye of the National Council for Mortar Board, and at their recent 2001 national conference in Ohio, the Converse chapter received the Project Excellence Award. Only 28 Mortar Board chapters receive this distinguished honor from over 200 chapters nationwide. The award is presented to chapters for designing and implementing creative projects throughout the school year.
“The Faculty Auction is always a success,” said Dr. Monica McCoy, the senior faculty advisor to the Converse chapter. “In addition to raising funds for the chapter, the auction really brings the students and faculty closer together.”
While most of the money raised goes directly to the Converse chapter, a significant portion is given towards scholarship support for a Converse student.
