Workshop StudentPassionate about art? Join a community of high school students motivated to stretch their artistic wings in a weeklong summer residential program focusing on contemporary practices in drawing, printmaking and book arts. You will:
  • Learn alternative drawing techniques using a variety of media
  • Explore silkscreen printmaking through direct drawing and photo emulsion processes
  • Examine digital possibilities as they apply to drawing and printmaking media
  • Develop artists books by incorporating techniques learned throughout the week
  • Install work in the Milliken Art Gallery for an end-of-the-week exhibition

The Program

Visual Arts Workshop faculty and studentsWithin a studio setting, you will study with Converse art faculty and guest artists whose talents have earned them numerous awards and inclusion in exhibitions worldwide. Enrollment is limited to 10 students, which allows you to enhance your creative skills through personal instruction, hands-on participation, and daily critique sessions. You will even have the opportunity to exhibit your work in the Milliken Art Gallery on the Converse campus.

 


Visual Arts Workshop Faculty

Andrew Blanchad Andrew Blanchard teaches printmaking and photography at Converse and is director of the Summer Visual Arts Program. He earned his BA with an emphasis in printmaking from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2000 and his MFA in printmaking from the University of Mississippi in 2004. In the last year, his prints have been showcased at the 5th Lessedra World Art Print Annual in Sofia, Bulgaria; the 2006 Harnett Biennial of American Prints at the University of Richmond, Richmond, VA; and the 5th Minnesota National Print Biennial at the Regis Center for Art, Minneapolis, MN.
Teresa Prater Teresa Prater is the chair of the Department of Art and Design at Converse and a professor of studio art. She teaches classes in painting, drawing, design, and book arts. She received her BFA from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and her MA and MFA in painting and drawing from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She primarily works with charcoal on paper, using the figure and supporting symbolic images to create high contrast narrative environments. Her drawings and paintings have been shown in 23 one-person exhibitions and over 100 exhibitions nationally and in Mexico and Switzerland. Several of her drawings have won top awards in juried competitions. In addition to her charcoal drawings, Prater makes artist books which are often exhibited with her drawings.
Jason Baldwin Jason Baldwin earned a BFA from the The University of Louisiana at Lafayette with an emphasis in painting in 2001. Directly after this accomplishment, he was accepted into the graduate program at the University of Mississippi. There he won several awards, including numerous Best of Show’s throughout the state. After receiving a MFA degree, he was granted a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center in June of 2005, and was published in the summer edition of the Photo Review. Currently, he is an instructor at The University of Southern Indiana, where he teaches foundations and painting. Jason has exhibited and been collected extensively throughout the US His most recent solo exhibition of paintings and silkscreen prints at the New Harmony Gallery in New Harmony, IN, garnered rave reviews.
Kathryn Boucher Kathryn Boucher is director of the Milliken Art Gallery at Converse as well as the co-director of the Summer Visual Arts Program. She graduated from Wofford College in 2000 with a BA in art history and a BA in finance. While at Wofford, she interned at the Spartanburg County Museum of Art for 2 years. Boucher also holds a certificate in non-profit management from Duke University, which she received in 2001. She worked in development at the Mint Museums in Charlotte, NC for five years. She has been at Converse College since August of 2006.

 

Enrollment

The program is open to motivated rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Admission is selective and based primarily on the student’s application, artwork and teacher recommendations.

Tuition

Tuition covers residence hall accommodations, all meals, materials and on-campus activities during the weeklong residential program. Early-bird tuition (applications received by April 15) is $750 and regular tuition is $775. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.

Early-bird deadline is April 15, 2007. Early-bird applicants will receive priority in admission and be notified of acceptance by May 1, 2007. Applications will be accepted through May 31, 2007.

The following must be submitted:

  • A completed application
  • $25 application fee (to be applied toward tuition if you are accepted and refunded if not accepted)
  • Financial Support Application (if you wish to be considered for assistance)
  • Sealed letters of support from two teachers
  • Images of 3-5 examples of artwork (must be sent in either jpeg format compatible for PC or high resolution prints on good quality paper) Please include title, dimensions, date, and medium with images
