The year 1889 started Converse College’s first academic term. Every fall we commemorate that event and celebrate school spirit with a week full of competition and celebration. Classes band together, panthers and devils competing for the coveted 1889 Spirit Cup. In the process, worthy causes are served, creative muscles are flexed, and fun is had by all (even the professors!).
The week is kicked off with the annual IMPACT Day of Service, when students in teams serve for a day with great community partners, like the Charles Lea Center, Mobile Meals on Wheels and H.A.L.T.E.R.
Canned food drives, blood drives and a coin war get students to stretch their capacity for generosity.
1889 week celebrates the diversity of the student body. For those with a creative bent (or just want to get messy), the big banner and tailgate decorating contests create visual displays of school pride.
For those with a dramatic flair, (or just like to act silly on stage) the Skit, Song and Dance Competition features elaborate and entertaining student-produced skits and dance routines.
The students aren’t the only ones with school spirit during 1889 week. The Faculty/Staff Skit, often parodying recent campus events and student leaders to hilarious effect, is for many the highlight of the entire week.
Students get down and dirty on the playing field as classes compete in the 1889 Powder Puff Football tournament.
At the end of it all, Converse students and their dates cut loose at the 1889 Semi-Formal. Whether DJ’d or with a live band, the party brings food, drinks and tunes for a fun-filled celebration of school spirit.
However, none of the hoopla can take students’ minds off of the excitement awaiting them during the night: the awarding of the 1889 Spirit Cup.
