Work hard. Play hard. We think that’s a good formula for life and we make it happen at Converse. In fact, one of our goals is to have a healthy balance between academic pursuits and social activities. So, maybe this weekend there will be a concert or a skiing trip or other excursion. Maybe the Valkyries are playing a big rival. It might be time for one of our major events, like Montgomery by Moonlight, or the Peppermint Ball.
So, yes, we have fun and sometimes we get really wacky. (The faculty once dressed up as the Spice Girls for a Lip Sync show!) But it isn’t just all “Wild Wednesdays.” We also have a more serious side and we cherish our 100-year-old traditions. They are enjoyable too, but in ways that have great significance and meaning. For example, 1889 Spirit Week commemorates the founding of Converse College, May Day recognizes students for their scholarship, leadership, and service, and at the Sophomore Ring Ceremony, we induct students into the exciting world of upperclass students.
As a new student, you’ll be adopted by a junior known as your Big Sister (and get your own Little Sister when you’re an upperclassman). The year you enter (or anticipate graduating) will determine whether you are a Pink Panther or Red Devil. These identities become a rich part of each class identity and even impact the color choice for much of your wardrobe going forward.
So, check out our Events Calendar, maybe even help shape it by being on the Student Activities Committee, and come learn how to work hard while generating good fun!
