Converse’s teacher preparation programs comprise a wide diversity of field and clinical experiences in public schools. Our program prepares you to become an effective teacher with an in-depth knowledge base of your field and appropriate teaching strategies for the developmental level of your students, guided by our faculty who continually challenge students to integrate theory with practice. After completing certification requirements you will be certified to teach Science in Grades 5-8 (Middle Level) or Biology or Chemistry in grades 9-12 (Secondary Level).

Clinical Experiences: The teacher education curriculum at Converse College includes sequential clinical experiences in public school settings. You will complete at least two of these clinical experiences prior to student teaching.

Convenience: Flexibility is essential for students who manage busy work schedules and personal commitments. Most required courses are conducted after 4 p.m., accommodating students’ busy schedules.

The MAT in Middle Level Science, MAT in Secondary Level Biology and MAT in Secondary Level Chemistry require a minimum of 36 graduate semester hours. The program will consist of 36 hours in Professional Education and 9 to 18 hours in content area courses. The number of content hours required may vary depending on your post-secondary academic background.

MAT in Science Secondary Level Biology Secondary Level ChemistryConverse’s goal is to foster/cultivate teachers with the cultural characteristics and school practices that reflect the needs of science students in the middle school or high school classroom. All of the courses in our program are designed to develop, improve, and continually upgrade the process in which our candidates seek to improve on ways they can develop knowledge of their students and their fields.

These courses are designed to keep their students engaged in learning, to provide a caring and challenging environment, to use a variety of texts to promote opportunities to learn acceptance and appreciation of others, to continue to develop instructional resources, to set attainable and worthwhile learning goals for students, and to develop meaningful learning opportunities for their students. A component for self- reflection and growth is included in each of the core courses as well as the content area courses.

The MAT degree in Middle Level Science, MAT in Secondary Level Biology, and MAT in Secondary Level Chemistry are designed to:

  • Provide a thorough course of study in human growth and development;
  • Develop skills in appropriate pedagogy and classroom management;
  • Promote a broad knowledge of the history, theory, and professional practices promote a broad knowledge of the history, theory, and professional practices that are related to middle level or secondary education;
  • Demonstrate computer proficiency in instructional technology including the knowledge of skills, strategies, software and hardware to be used in classroom management and computer-assisted instruction;
  • Plan, implement and assess instruction in simulated settings and in real classroom settings as a student teacher*.

*The PRAXIS II exam is taken by students before the completion of student teaching.

MAT in Middle Level Science

Middle Level Science at Converse is designed to prepare students to become well-qualified teachers and certified professionals. The graduate student who wishes to teach in grades 6-8 must meet the admission requirements specified in the Graduate Catalog. All middle level areas require a minimum of 9 semester hours at the graduate level in the content subject.

Different states have different requirements; it is imperative that students are careful in planning their program, particularly if they plan to teach in a state other than South Carolina.

Attaining these objectives will necessitate the development of certain competencies which will be demonstrated by the student in his/her courses, practicums, and student teaching.

MAT in Secondary Level Biology

Secondary Level Biology at Converse is designed to prepare students to become well-qualified biology teachers and certified professionals. The candidate in biology at the secondary level (grades 9- 12) must have an undergraduate degree in biology. In addition to meeting major requirements, prospective candidates in biology must complete hours in professional education and psychology, as well as a minimum of 9 semester hours at the graduate level in the content subject. The graduate student who wishes to teach at the secondary level must meet the admission requirements specified by graduate admissions.

Students are required to pass the Praxis II: Biology Content Knowledge Exam to be eligible to student teach.

MAT in Secondary Level Chemistry

Converse’s Secondary Level in Chemistry program is designed to prepare students to become well-qualified chemistry teachers and certified professionals for grades 9-12.  The candidate in chemistry at the secondary level must have an undergraduate degree in chemistry. In addition, candidates in chemistry must complete hours in professional education and psychology.The graduate student who wishes to teach at the secondary level must meet the admission requirements specified by admissions. All secondary areas require a minimum of 9 semester hours at the graduate level in the content subject.

Students are required to pass the Praxis II: Biology Content Knowledge Exam to be eligible to student teach.
