DEPARTMENT OF MUSICOLOGY
AND COMPOSITION |
- What are the effects of the French Revolution on music in the 19th century?
- How do Classical forms influence American popular songs?
- What is it like for a composer to hear the premiere of her first string quartet?
Students intrigued by these questions should consider a major in music history, theory, or composition. Majors in these areas have the opportunity to delve deeply into the nature of music, studying with faculty who are actively engaged in research, composition, and performance. Course offerings in
musicology and composition are extensive, and small class sizes and the opportunity to work closely with distinguished and devoted faculty--as well as visiting composers and scholars--provide majors with a first-rate educational experience.
Each program encourages students to develop performance skills and gain in-depth understanding of history, theory, and literature. Student composers present a senior recital of original works, and majors in all three areas have the opportunity of presenting an Honors Thesis during their senior year.
