Dr. McCoy’s training is in experimental psychology with an emphasis on developmental issues, and her research focuses on child abuse and neglect. She received her BA degree in psychology from Grove City College, her MS in experimental psychology from Villanova University, and her Ph.D. in psychology with a concentration in developmental psychology and a minor in statistics from the University of Wyoming.

She received the Kathryne Amelia Brown Award for excellence in teaching in 1999 and the O’Herron Award for faculty excellence in 2004. In 2009, Dr. McCoy was chosen for the South Carolina Governor’s Distinguished Professor of the Year Award, and in 2010 she was named the South Carolina Professor of the Year by CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Scholarly & Research Activity

Dr. McCoy’s current research deals with the criminal response in cases when children die after being left in hot cars.
