Dr. Bynum retired in 2018.

Dr. Bynum received his PhD in Spanish literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His areas of scholarly interest include romanticism, 19th century literature—with a special emphasis on poetry—and art history. His book, The Romantic Imagination in the Works of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, was published by UNC Press. After having served as Director of Advising since 1992, and as Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences since 2003, he was named Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of Student Success in 2009, heading up the Center for Student Development and Success. Dr. Bynum taught all levels of Spanish language and a variety of advanced level literature courses in which the discussion often included art, history and philosophy.
