The Role of the College Supervisor

  1. The college supervisor is the liaison between Converse College and school personnel and is readily available for consultation and/or interpretation of policies affecting student teachers and cooperating teachers.
  2. The college supervisor has completed advanced study in supervision and has preparation in professional education and ADEPT.
  3. The college supervisor has school experiences germane to the area of supervision, has completed an appropriate institutional training program for teaching assessment, has participated in the Converse College orientation session, and has preparation in professional education and ADEPT. If the college supervisor does not have preparation in the teaching major, another institutional faculty member may also observe the student teacher.
  4. The college supervisor, after conferring with other informed individuals, determines the grade of the student teacher and submits that recommendation to the Director of Clinical Experiences, Ed Gosnell.
  5. The college supervisor observes and/or confers with the student teacher at least six times during student teaching. The college supervisor completes a minimum of two formal observations using the ADEPT Formal Evaluation Observation Form.
  6. The college supervisor does not expect classroom plans to change during observations.
  7. The college supervisor has regular conferences with the cooperating teacher. Depending upon whether inclusion of both the student teacher and cooperating teacher is possible, these conferences may or may not include the student teacher.
  8. The college supervisor, the cooperating teacher, and the student teacher
    1. complete the midterm and final consensus ADEPT Formal Evaluations,
    2. complete individual midterm and final ADEPT Formal Evaluations, and
    3. develop an Intervention Plan, if necessary.
The college supervisor submits these documents to the Director of Clinical Experiences.
  9. The college supervisor apprises the student teacher in writing of teaching performance through formal observations and the ADEPT Evaluation. The documentation includes a written account of strengths and weaknesses.
  10. The college supervisor submits student teacher observations to the Director of Clinical Experiences.
  11. In the case of a problem of a serious nature during student teaching, the student teacher notifies the college supervisor. The college supervisor notifies the Director of Clinical Experiences, who notifies the advisor. The Director of Clinical Experiences arranges a conference to include the cooperating teacher, the college supervisor, the student teacher, and the advisor to create an Intervention Plan. In rare cases where a district and the college change a placement or where a student teacher withdraws, consultation includes appropriate school district administrators and the Director of Teacher Education.
  12. The college supervisor evaluates the student teacher using the Converse College Ideal Educator Rating Scale near the end of the student teaching experience.
  13. The college supervisor, after conferring with the cooperating teacher, suggests the final grade of “Pass” or “Fail” for the student teacher at the end of the student teaching program. The Director of Clinical Experiences then submits the grade to the registrar.
  14. Before a student teacher earns a failing grade in student teaching, the college supervisor meets with the Director of Teacher Education and the Director of Clinical Experiences to discuss the student teacher’s inadequacies addressed and the Intervention Plan. The college supervisor documents the student teacher’s failure to meet the required standards of the Intervention Plan.
  15. The college supervisor and the cooperating teacher review the student teacher’s lesson plans using the Converse College Lesson Plan Template and determine at which point the student teacher can transfer to writing lesson plans in the format used by the cooperating teacher.
