Everybody's Searching For A Blue Sky.

It’s the end of the year and I couldn’t be more excited about the summer.

I kicked off the last week of class by attending one of the best concerts I have been to in a long time. Everyone remembers Hanson when we were little, but they’ve gone back to their independent roots and never sounded better. My friend Amanda and I drove just under 2 hours to catch the last leg of their The Walk tour. Sadly, we couldn’t break away from various exams and classes to participate in the walk, but the show was amazing. Kate Voegele opened first, followed by Stephan Kellogg and The Sixers. Both gave noteworthy performances. I especially liked the lyric in one of the Sixers’ songs that read “french kissing boys into men” (Thirteen). I also really enjoyed the sporadic breakdown of Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel”. During the Sixers set, Taylor made an early appearance to sing along with the band.

Finally, the show began. The brothers played a range of songs from each album and even included a special acoustic version of “MmmBop”. My inner eight-year-old thoroughly enjoyed that. They also added a random blurb of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” into “If Only” which surprised me and made the audience laugh. My absolute favorite part of the night was the inclusion of Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride”. When I was eight-years-old, I loved three things: Hanson, Wild America and my new stereo. Needless to say, if I wasn’t listening to my Hanson tape, I was listening to my Wild America soundtrack tape, which included this song. Who would have known that the little girl sitting in her room drumming out a beat to Steppenwolf with a Bop magazine would later be in The Orange Peel in Asheville listening to this? It summed up my entire childhood in about four minutes and twenty-seven seconds.

For a moment or two, I have to shamelessly promote the new Hanson album. I listened to a few of their songs on the official Hanson myspace, but mostly knew the old stuff. You have to check it out. The new songs are all amazing and sound even better live. Hanson is one of the few bands that I can say sounds better live than on the CD. Unfortunately, my friend Amanda and I have searched far and wide in every musical store near Converse and cannot locate it. But that’s what online ordering is for. Thus, I ordered my CD/DVD bundle of The Walk tour. Maybe it will be in before my birthday.

After the show, there was a small signing outside of the Orange Peel that few knew about. Fortunately, Amanda and I made it, as well as a few other fans. The boys were all very friendly and I felt as if I were with best friends. It was funny to see just how different each brother was, but how they worked together flawlessly. We laughed and goofed around until about 2am. All in all, it was a wonderful night and definitely worth the sleep deprivation the next day. I made some great memories and have a TON of pictures and video to show for it. Hope everyone's summer begins as well as mine did!
