John Constable took over as Head Soccer Coach of the Converse College soccer program at the beginning of the 2011 year. Prior to his arrival, Constable coached for 4 years at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. During this time, Constable coached the men, women and Junior varsity and assisted Head Coach Jim Allen in leading a total of 75 soccer players each year.  At Delta State, Constable’s hands were certainly full, coaching on average, a 55 game fall schedule between August to November while on practice days, he helped coordinate and lead 3 practices per day, for the 3 separate soccer teams on campus.

Constable enjoyed many successes during his time at Delta State. He helped lead the men’s team to its most successful season in program history and also helped the Ladies and JV teams accomplish a similar achievement. Prior to arrival at Delta State, Constable played for 4 years at Tusculum College and Seton Hill University. During his time at Tusculum, the team reached as high a ranking as number 1 in the nation and also reached the Elite 8 of the National Tournament.

In addition to his collegiate playing experience, Constable played for Scottish Professional Premier League team, Motherwell Football Club. Constable signed 3 separate yearly contracts with the Professional Club who at that time were coached by current Nottingham Forrest FC Head Coach, Billy Davies, who is highly regarded as one of the best up and coming Head Coaches in British Professional Soccer. Although the professional career was short lived, Constable truly feels that the lessons learned and gained were truly invaluable. Although he never got to make a first team appearance, Constable truly believes that the experience of practicing and sharing a locker room with top class professionals will only aid him in his Head Coaching collegiate career.

On the whole, Constable’s program philosophies are that “grades come first”. As much as Converse Soccer strives to progress on the field, the bottom line is that Constable views his job as one where the ultimate goal is to prepare his players for life after soccer. Constable, although unbelievably passionate about his soccer, has been quoted on many times stating “My job is to prepare my players to be professionals in their chosen career, not professional soccer players”. The Converse soccer program under Constable is built around hard work, team work, organization and discipline. In Constable’s view, these are the 4 building blocks of any successful soccer program and are the base of which the Converse Soccer program, under his leadership, builds upon.

Constable, a native of Coatbridge Scotland, has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Seton Hill University. In addition to this, Constable holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Delta State University and he also recently earned a National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Constable resides in Spartanburg with his wife Sarah and two Pomeranian puppy dogs, Mia and Lola.
