Valkyries Win Season Opener, 18-5

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, G.A. – The Converse College lacrosse team brought home a season opener win Saturday afternoon, taking down Emmanuel College 18-5. The Valkyries are now 1-0 while the Lions fall to 0-1.

The Valkyries worked together as a team to bring home a great first win. Chelsea Worrell (Orlando, F.L) and Jordy Taylor (Landson, S.C.) both had four goals for the day. Worrell had two assist and four ground balls while Taylor had one assist and four ground balls.  Freshman Laura Starkes (Whitby, ON, Canada) stepped up and contributed three goals along with picking up two ground balls. Teammate Jennifer Barksdale (Clinton, S.C.) also contributed two goals on the day.

These were not the only Valkyries to score, Amelia Helm (Piedmont, C.A.), Emma Murphy (Antrim, N.H.), Elizabeth Gabriele (Simpsonville, S.C.), Melissa Goodman (Suwanee, G.A.) Jessica Walters (Fort Mill, S.C.) and Rachel Halley (Lake Mary, F.L.) each had one goal apiece. Helm, Murphy, and Halley also had four ground balls where teammate Walters had three.

In the goal Alex Gurecki (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Sandra Ponce (Germantown, M.D) split playing time, Gurecki had five saves in the first half.

The Valkyries will host Roberts Wesleyan for their first home game of the season, February 16th with a 3:00 pm start time.
