SPARTANBURG, SC- The Converse College tennis team defeated the Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist College, 6-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Valkyries earned their first win of the season to move to 1-1 overall, while Spartanburg Methodist fell to 4-0 on the year.
It took little time for the Valkyries to gain the upper hand as the #1 doubles pairing of junior Olivia Self (Greenville, SC) and sophomore Taylor Bland (Irmo, SC) dominated Amanda Richards and Ny Scott, 8-0 to put Converse ahead early. The #2 doubles pairing of freshman Raissa Morandi (Campinas, Brazil) and sophomore Marisa Esformes (Miami, FL) also swept Jewel Singleton and Laura Morales in their doubles match, 8-0.
The singles competition was more of the same as Self defeated Richards (6-0, 6-0) at the #1 slot. Bland defeated Scott at #2 singles with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Morandi played at the #3 singles position for the Valkyries, but was the first to finish her match as she made short work of Singleton, 6-0 and 6-0. At #4 singles, Esformes also won over Morales (6-0, 6-0). Overall, Converse won 64 of 65 total games and did not lose a set.
The purple and gold will be in action again on Saturday, Feb. 11 when they host Pikeville at 3pm.
