
CHARLOTTE, NC- Senior Kathleen Coleman (Sumter, SC) and freshman Casilda Ruiz (Pensacola, FL) led the Valkyries cross country squad at the Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 5. The meet was held at McAlpine Creek Park.
Coleman finished with a 6k time of 24:20, the 3rd fastest time in school history, while Ruiz recorded the 4th fastest time in school history with a time of 24:21. They were followed by the freshman duo of Grace Popek (24:48) and Jacqueline Alexander (24:59) who ran the 8th and 9th fastest times in school history respectively. Sophomore Abby Sorrenson rounded out the scoring positions for the purple and gold, running a time of 25:34 for the 6k course. Freshmen Melanie Martin (26:43) and Sierra Vargas (27:12) were the 6th and 7th runners for Converse.
The Valkyries finished 18th out of 26 total teams to compete in the race. Their 438 points bested conference opponents Belmont Abbey (506), Barton (545), Limestone (586), and Coker (737). They also finished ahead of Lincoln Memorial (503), Carson-Newman (533), Francis Marion (654), and S.C. Aiken (701). Conference Carolinas Champion Queens University of Charlotte won the meet with a total of 39 points, followed by Montevallo (140) and Mount Olive (145). Queens and Montevallo will represent the southeast region at the Division II NCAA National Championships.
