
WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Valkyries cross country squad took second place at the Wilbur Ross Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8, narrowly loosing to the Rams of Winston-Salem State University. Winston-Salem State won the meet with a score of 41, while the purple and gold finished with a total of 51 points. The Valkyries finished ahead of conference foe Pfeiffer University (3rd/61 points), Saint Augustine's College (4th/94 points), Salem College (5th/120 points), Livingstone College (6th/183 points), and Johnson C. Smith University (7th/187 points).
Senior Kathleen Coleman (Sumter, SC) was once again the top finisher for the Valkyries finishing in 6th place overall with a time of 20:51 for the 5k course. Freshman Casilda Ruiz (Pensacola, FL) was the next finisher for Converse in 9th place with a time of 21:08, while freshman Grace Popek (Greensboro, NC) and sophomore Abby Sorrenson (Galion, OH) were directly behind her in 10th and 11th place with times of 21:28 and 21:31 respectively. Freshman Sierra Vargas (Williamston, SC) rounded out the scoring positions for Converse in 14th place, covering the course in a time of 21:34.
The Valkyries will have next weekend off and will be in action again at the Conference Carolinas Championship Meet on Friday, Oct. 2. The meet will take place at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, NC, and the women's race will start at 4pm.
