CHARLOTTE, NC- Freshman Sierra Vargas (Williamston, SC) posted the 7th fastest 5k time in school history, finishing with a time of 20:20 as she led the Valkyries cross country team on Friday at the Charlotte Invitational. Converse placed 27th in an extremely competitive field of 36 teams.
Virginia Tech won the meet with 84 points, followed by Furman University (127) in 2nd, and Wake Forest University (149) in 3rd. Converse placed 7th out of all Division II schools, placing ahead of Erskine College, Mars Hill College, Limestone College, Presbyterian College, Young Harris College, Guilford College, the University of South Carolina Aiken, Francis Marion University, Coker College, and Claflin University.
Vargas was supported by the strong performances of freshman Casilda Ruiz (20:41), senior Kathleen Coleman (20:48), freshman Grace Popek (21:00), and sophomore Abby Sorrenson (21:27) to round out the top five. The top five runners for Converse had an average 5k time of 20:51. Freshman Jacqueline Alexander had a breakout race for the Valkyries, finishing sixth on the team in a time of 21:31. Freshman Melanie Martin (22:16) and junior Shannon Bishop (22:39) rounded out the performances for the purple and gold.
The Valkyries will travel to Winston-Salem, NC next weekend to compete in the Wilbur Ross Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8. The race will start at 9:30am.
