Cross Country Team Competes at Clemson Invitational

SPARTANBURG,SC- Senior Kathleen Coleman and freshman Casilda Ruiz both posted 6k times to place them in Converse’s all-time top ten on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Clemson Invitational at Musser Farms in Seneca, SC.

The Valkyries raced their first 6k of the season against an extremely competitive field to come in 10th place overall and 3rd out of Division II teams.  They scored 327 points to best conference opponent Erskine College (342) and Chattahoochee Tech (365).  Clemson University won the meet with 45 points, followed by Florida State University (54) who was the 2010 Division I NCAA National Championship runner-up.

Coleman turned in a time of 25:32 for the 6k course, to come in as the first runner for the Valkyries.  Her time is the 7th fastest in school history.  Ruiz was the second finisher for Converse with a time of 25:43, placing her in the number 10 spot on the school’s all-time 6k list.  They were followed by freshman Sierra Vargas (25:55), freshman Grace Popek (26:15), and sophomore Abby Sorrenson (26:36) who ran solid for the Valkyries in the number three, four, and five positions.  Freshman Jacqueline Alexander (27:39), freshman Melanie Martin (27:40), and junior Shannon Bishop (27:56) rounded out the performances for the purple and gold.

The team will have next weekend off before returning to action at the Charlotte Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park on Friday, Sept. 30.  The women’s race will start at 4pm.
