Cross Country Runs Well at Eye Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Valkyries cross country team opened the season at the Eye Opener Invitational at the Roger Milliken Center. The team finished 12th overall (312 points) in a field of 22 schools over the tough 5000 meter course.
Freshman Jessica Postlewaite led the way for Converse, finishing in 40th place with a time of 20:01. That performance makes her 3rd on the school’s all-time 5k list. She was followed by senior Brittany Hogue, who had a breakthrough race finishing in 48th place (20:19), becoming 5th all-time. Junior Samantha Nicholson was close behind finishing the course in 20:40 for 63rd. Freshman Abby Sorrenson had a solid race placing 89th (21:38) and junior Kathleen Coleman rounded out the top five, finishing 120th (23:00).
“Today was a big step in the right direction,” stated head coach Andrew Burnette. “It is early in the season and times will reflect that, but the effort was there across the board.”
The Valkyries finished 3rd among all Division II schools in attendance behind Anderson University and Lenior-Rhyne University. The Valkyries finished ahead of Division I rival Presbyterian College (459 points), and Division II opponents Carson-Newman (331 pts) and Catawba (466 points).
They will be back in action on Sept. 18th at the Winthrop-Asics Invitational.
