Valkyries Soccer Hosts Haiti Fundraiser Dinner on Wednesday

Thanks to all who volunteered and contributed to our efforts in making the Spaghetti Fudraiser Dinner a huge Success. The Converse and Spartanburg community helped us raise more than $2,000.00. Also, a special thanks is due to Panera Bread, Ribault Street, Jimmy Johns, Ashley Mercuri, the Eller Family, and the Clinton family for your help and generous donations.

Spartanburg, SC-- The tragedy of the recent earthquake in Haiti reached all the way to Converse College's soccer squad as it affects Freudna Mathurin, a member of the team who is an international student-athlete from Haiti. Many of Mathurin's family members resided in or near Port-au-Prince, a major disaster area in Haiti. The Valkyries assistant soccer coach Mary Rea along with the team have organized a dinner to benefit disaster relief in Haiti.

The event will be a Spaghetti dinner held at Converse College in the Montgomery Student Center located in the middle of campus. The team is asking for food donations from parents and the Spartanburg community to make the event a success. The squad will prepare the meal and tickets are just $3.00. The dinner takes place from 5:00 - 7:00 on the evening of Wednesday, January 20th. Donations are appreciated.

"Our ladies are a tight-knit group and they always support one another," said Converse head coach Rob DePaol. "When we received the news about the earthquake, our thoughts immediatly turned to Freudna and her family. It's a great thing to see the team do something to support one another while raising money for the relief effort in Haiti."

Proceeds from the event will go to Catholic Relief Services (CRS). CRS is the major relief effort organization of the Catholic Church and is one of the most efficient nonprofit organizations in relief services as 93% of funds received go directly to helping those in need. CRS is on the NonProfit Times top 100 list and has been awarded the Best in America Seal.
