Russell Excels in BGMC Meet

Converse College freshman star Jenni Russell came through in a big way for the Valkyries at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference championship in Charlotte, NC.

Finishing fifth in the 400 Individual Medley, Russell decided to set the bar even higher in the 200 Meter Breaststroke. She finished in second place with a new school record. Russell's time of 2:22.30 moved her into the top 16 in the nation for Division II in the 200 Breaststroke category.

Finishing second allowed Russell to receive the honor of All Conference and Academic All Conference, which she will receive in the Spring. She will leave Friday for Athens, GA, to attend the time trial for the 200 Breast for a possible NCAA Division II automatic cut.

"To finish second in the conference in an event is huge for a freshmen and this program," said Converse coach Susan Kunkler. "The experienced she gained and the tone she has set for this program is monumental. And I could not be more pleased with how the entire team did. To come into a conference of this caliber and do what these young women did is more than a coach could dream or ask for."

"I'm very excited with where we finished this year and we will look to be a bigger threat with the incoming recruiting class and returning swimmers," she said.
