Music is one of our passions here at Converse. Our renowned Petrie School of Music is the only professional school of music in the U.S. within a liberal arts college for women, and we offer a range of majors that includes performance, music therapy, music education, music history, theory, and composition. You don’t have to be a music major, or even a Converse student, to join in the melody that drifts through our halls and fill our hearts.
The Petrie School has hosted some of the world’s most gifted musicians, including Yo Yo Ma, Chanticleer, The King’s Singers, the Tokyo String Quartet, and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Ensemble. Many of them perform as part of our acclaimed Carlos Moseley Chamber Music Series. Large ensembles perform in the magnificent 1500-seat Twichell Auditorium, while smaller performances take place in the acoustic marvel that is our Daniel Recital Hall.
Of course, Converse’s talented students have their own wonderful performing groups, including the Converse Symphony Orchestra, Converse Wind Ensemble, Converse Chorale, Spartanburg Festival Chorus, Chamber Singers, and a variety of student chamber ensembles. And every year the Converse Opera Theatre presents fully staged operatic masterpieces as well as a pair of opera scene programs.
When our students aren’t performing, our faculty are, with top-notch ensembles such as the Converse Trio, which present concerts throughout the year, sharing the calendar with faculty soloists. Anyone living in or visiting the Spartanburg area is welcome to come enjoy these events. Most concerts are free admission.
