Dr. Gunter, Interim Chair of the Department of Art and Design, has been active in the field of arts and education for 30 years. As a classroom art teacher for 21 years, she received numerous awards including Union High School Teacher of the Year, Union County Teacher of the Year, Dorman High School Teacher of the Year, SC Art Education Association Secondary Art Teacher of the Year, and SC Art Education Association Art Educator of the Year. She authored The History of the SC Art Education Association (2004); “Understanding and Sustaining Change in Art Education,” NAEA Advisory, National Art Education Association (Spring 2002); “Membership Recruitment” – Emphasis magazine published by the South Carolina Education Association, (September 2002); co-authored with A. Ray Doughty The History of Arts Education in South Carolina: A Brief Retrospective, The South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education (May 2002); and her doctoral dissertation: The History of Discipline-based Art Education in South Carolina and Its Impact on Southern Rural Female Middle-School Students, University of South Carolina (2000). Dr. Gunter was recently appointed historian to the South Carolina Education Association and serves on the SCEA Archives Committee.
Dr. Gunter has taught courses at Converse for the Education Department and for the Art Education Department due to her experiences in Educational Administration as a middle school principal, Adult Education Director, Alternative School Director, Fine Arts Coordinator, Family Literacy Director and art teacher. She has teaching and administrative experience at all levels. As a practicing artist, she exhibits locally and regionally. She is a member of the Union County Arts Council, Spartanburg Artists’ Guild and a former Guild Gallery Director. She is a past board member of the Union Carnegie Library, the Union Chamber of Commerce, and the Upstate WIB Youth Advisory Council. Currently, Dr. Gunter serves on the board of the Children's Advocacy Center of Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union Counties and is an art consultant to several schools and districts.
