What does confidentiality mean?

When you speak with a counselor, that communication is protected by confidentiality. The counselor will not reveal any information about you to an outside party without your written permission. So, if your parents, a roommate, a friend, or even a college official calls a counselor to inquire after you, the counselors will not release any information without your consent. However, counselors must take action when someone’s life is at risk or when there is an apparent case of current child abuse even if confidentiality must be broken. For more information, simply consult with one of the counselors.

What do I do if I have an emotional emergency?

You always have a number of resources to help you at Converse:

  • find a Community Advisor or Resident Counselor, they know what to do
  • call the Wellness Center at Ext. 9258 for either the Nurse, Counselor or Chaplain
  • Public Safety is available 24 hours a day at Ext. 9026.
  • there is a CA and RC on call each weekend to help you; let them help you find a staff
member if it’s after office hours.

What is the Wellness Library?

Educational materials are available on most physical and mental health topics in the Wellness Library located in the Wellness Center. Many of the brochures are free, and books can be checked out.

What does confidentiality mean?

When a student speaks with a counselor, that communication is protected by confidentiality. The counselor will not reveal any information about a student to an outside party without her written permission - even to parents. This is a privileged communication protected by law. The same holds true for parents who wish to speak with a counselor - the communication is protected by the same confidentiality. Please know that the counselors work with students to improve family communication, not impede it. If you are concerned about your daughter, please call one of the counselors to discuss your concerns. While the counselor may not be able to reveal confidential information to you, your input may be extremely helpful for the counselor assisting your daughter. When someone’s life is at risk or when there is an apparent case of current child abuse, counselors must take action even if confidentiality is broken. If you daughter becomes seriously ill or suicidal you will be contacted. Parents are always welcome and are encouraged to call a counselor about their daughter if they feel she is having difficulty and needs help. A counselor will look into the situation and follow up with the parent. For more information, please call Carol or Heidi at 596-9595.
