What do I need to bring to campus with me?

Although, rooms are adequate for your living experience at Converse, remember there is not a lot of storage space for unnecessary items. A suggested list of items includes:

  • Shower caddy

  • Pillows
  • Bath linens

What items are prohibited in the residence halls?

Space heaters, ceiling fans, candles, incense, oil lamps, halogen lamps, extension cords and items with open flames are prohibited. All cooking equipment with exposed heating elements may not be used in student rooms and may be used in the hall kitchen. Pets are not allowed in the residence halls unless they are fish in an aquarium no larger than 10 gallons. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are prohibited in the residence halls.

Can I bring belongings to campus early?

Unfortunately, we can not accommodate students who wish to arrive early or bring items early. Due to staffing, storage limitations, and the physical readiness of the residence halls, we are not able to make this an option.

Is there cable TV on campus?

Each room has cable television. You do need to bring a television set if you wish.

Do I need to bring a vacuum cleaner?

Each residence hall has a vacuum cleaner. You may check this out through your Resident Counselor. You may bring one if you wish to have your own.

Is there Internet access in each room?

Each room has data connections for each resident to the college network and students are allowd to bring their own wireless routers. Computer labs are also available for students to use and schedules are posted in each lab. For more information, you can contact Converse's Campus Technology at ITS@converse.edu.

Are there kitchens in the residence halls?

Each floor has a hall kitchen equipped with a stove, refrigerator, sink, ironing board, and counter space.

Do the residence halls close during the academic year?

The halls close for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Breaks. The dates can be found on the college calendar and the Office of Residential Life and Judicial Programs notifies students of these closings. Students must leave the residence halls when they are closed.

What meal plans are offered to resident students?

Because room and board costs are incorporated, each student is afforded 3 meals each day the college is open. Sneakers, the campus grill, is an option for campus dining and students may use a flex dollar plan for this option. For more information, you should contact Dining Services.

Where are the laundry facilities located?

Each building has a laundry room. The cost washers and dryers usage is incorporated into room and board, so you do not need to collect quarters.

Whom do I contact if I am interested in a loft or carpet?

For a loft, contact Randy Sain at Barewood Furniture (828-697-7038). Let him know you are a Converse student. For carpet, contact Hodge Carpet (864-573-9288). Let them know you are a Converse student.

Do I need to bring a phone and an answering machine?

You will need to bring a phone. Each room is assigned a phone number and local service is included in your room and board costs. The Business Office distributes long distance codes and you are responsible for your long distance bill. You do not have to use this code; you may use calling cards. You do not need to bring an answering machine because each room has voicemail.

Where do I pick up my mail?

In Montgomery Student Activities Building, you will have a post office box in the post office. Here you will receive mail and packages as well as be able to send mail and packages.

Does Converse sponsor a recycling program?

At Converse, we recycle paper, cardboard and aluminum cans. Bins are on each hall.

What do I do if I lose my room key?

You should immediately contact your Resident Counselor. If the key is not found, you should schedule a meeting with the Assistant Dean of Students for Engagement and Learning. You will be assessed a $50 fee for the lock change and new key. If you lose your access card, you should contact Campus Safety.

What do I do about roommate conflicts?

You and your roommate will complete a Roommate Contract upon moving into your room in the fall. Your Community Advisor will work with you and your roommate in doing this. As conflict arises, you and your roommate should work together to reach compromise. If you desire the assistance of your Community Advisor, you should schedule a time with her and she can assist you in resolving a conflict.

What do I do if I get locked out of my room?

You should contact Campus Safety and ask them to let you into your room. You will be assessed a fee after the third time.

What do I do if my neighbors are too loud?

Residence Halls are governed by 24-hour courtesy quiet hours. Quiet hours are from 7pm-7am. If your neighbors are loud, you should politely let them know they are being too loud. If quiet hours cannot be resolved among students, you should notify your Community Advisor or Resident Counselor to handle the situation.

Where can I store my belongings over the summer?

There is no on-campus storage for belongings over the summer. The Campus Life Office has information on local storage facilities.

Whom do I call if I have a maintenance concern?

As a concern arises, you should write it on the Maintenance Sheet outside of your Community Advisor’s door. She will communicate this to her Resident Counselor on a daily basis and maintenance checks and responds to these needs on a daily basis. You should check with your Community Advisor or Resident Counselor if your maintenance request is not met.

How do I hang things in my room?

You may use small nails in the mounting strip on the walls. Using nails, tacks, and tape is not permitted. You may use removable mounting squares with no color.

Can I have pets in my room?

Only fish are allowed in a tank no larger than 10 gallons.

Where can I get a parking permit?

The Office of Campus Safety has parking permits and will share with you some of the guidelines about driving on campus.

What furniture will be in my room when I arrive?

Each room is furnished with a bed, desk, dresser and chair for each occupant of the room. Each room also has a microfridge.

How can I change rooms?

Room Change Periods are designated by the College and are reflected on the College calendar. If a room change is necessary, you should schedule a meeting with your Resident Counselor and she will review the process and give you the necessary paperwork. Also, the Student Handbook has a detailed description of the process. After completing the paperwork, the Assistant Dean of Students for Engagement and Learning must authorize the room change. No changes should take place without this authorization.

Does Converse provide insurance for my belongings?

No, Converse does not provide insurance for belongings.

How do I get into the residence hall?

Each student has an access card with a code. This card allows students to get onto the residence hall floors. This card and code should not be shared with anyone else. Your access card will give you access to all residence halls.

Are males permitted in the residence halls?

Male visitation hours are:

12 noon to 12am   Sunday - Thursday 
12 noon - 2 AM   Friday & Saturday

All male guests must be signed in and out and escorted at all times. Each Converse student can only have two guests at the same time.

What are the dimensions of the residence hall rooms?

Room dimensions for Belk, Morris and Williams are 13’11" x 11’9". The windows in Belk and Morris are standard single windows with a height of 68". In Williams, the height is 63.5" and the width is 79.5". The rooms in Cudd, Andrews, Pell and Dexter vary due to the uniqueness of each room. Bed dimensions are 36" x 76".

Will I have my own bathroom?

Each residence hall has community baths that are shared by the residents.

Is someone available to clean my room?

Each residence hall has a housekeeper who is responsible for cleaning common areas, hallways, bathrooms, and lobbies. She does not clean individual student rooms.

How many students live on the hall?

Depending on where you live, there could be 12-40 people sharing a hall with you. In Belk, Williams, and Morris, an average of 40 people live on each hall.

Are the residence halls air-conditioned?

Each residence hall has heat and air conditioning. Belk, Dexter, Morris, Pell and Williams operate through the College’s boiler system which means these buildings are unable to easily switch between heat and air conditioning. Residents in Andrews and Cudd are able to control whether they have heat or air conditioning.

How are Community Advisors chosen?

Each spring, students submit an application and go through an individual and group interview for positions. The qualifications are:
  • a 2.5 GPA, have lived on-campus for one year
  • a genuine desire to help others
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Each fall, Community Advisors go through training for a period of time before the residence halls open.

How are Resident Counselors chosen?

Resident Counselors must be Converse II or graduate level students and be in good standing with the graduate school or undergraduate college. They must possess an interest in the growth and development of college students and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
