"I do solemnly pledge my honor that as long as I am a
student at Converse College, I will faithfully uphold the
principles of the Honor System, will cherish and guard its
traditions, and will respect and observe its requirements. I
make this pledge in view of the pledges of my fellow students,
which signifies our mutual Trust and Resolve to keep our honor
forever sacred."
This Honor Tradition is a proud part of the
Converse College heritage and forms the cornerstone of student
life. In 1916, students created this code which Converse women
of today continue to adhere. The Honor Tradition is a daily
enactment of the Founders’ Ideal and each student actively
pledges her allegiance to the Honor Code. Each fall, students
sign the Honor Code at a ceremony and the code hangs in Wilson
Hall until they graduate.
To preserve the Honor Code, the student body
elects fellow students to the Honor Board and the Civitas
Council. Their duty is to review violations of the Honor Code
and Community Values. The Administration empowers them to hear
violations, deliberate on the information, and decide sanctions.
All cases are confidential. For a detailed description of
policies and procedures, see the Student Handbook.
Honor Board and Civitas Council are supported by
an administrative advisor and two faculty advisors. They fall
under the supervision of the Office of Judicial Programs. The Office of Judicial Programs at Converse
College promotes campus-wide support for the Honor Tradition as
well as advises well-trained, highly motivated judicial boards
to make good, sound decisions. This is accomplished by serving
as an advocate and providing administrative support.
