AMERICAN SOCIETY OF INTERIOR DESIGNERS
(ASID)
ASID is a student chapter of the professional organization for interior designers. The club is open to all students interested in the interior design major and the interior design program encourages all majors to join in order to take advantage of the many benefits and opportunities available to student during their course of study and upon graduation as working professionals. Membership in ASID provides interaction with design professionals, mentor programs, internship network contacts, and many exciting field trips throughout the school year. National and regional dues are required.
ART CLUB
The Art Club’s purpose is to promote interest in the visual arts through a variety of art exhibitions, campus events, and community projects for people in the arts and non-arts fields. Our traditional projects include a campus-wide Winter and Spring Art Sale, upkeep of the Windows on Main Street Gallery, community outreach with children’s art programs, and coordination of the Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition.
ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS (AAAS)
The purpose of the Association of African American Students is to promote a spirit of cooperation and provide a forum in which issues, problems, and concerns common to minority students can be addressed. This organization exists to promote unity, loyalty, and service. Membership is open to all interested students.
BAPTIST
COLLEGIATE MINISTRY
The Baptist Collegiate Ministry is an organization sponsored by South Carolina Baptist churches for all students who will come and be a part. The primary purposes of the
BCM are to assist and encourage students toward spiritual growth and to provide opportunities for developing meaningful, supportive friendships. Activities include Bible studies, informal worship, recreational events, community service projects, and retreats. Most
BCM programs are held at the Baptist Student Center, located off campus at 529 North Church Street.

CAMPUS CRUSADE FOR CHRIST
The purpose of this organization is to aid students, spiritually through Bible studies and meetings. This organization strives to become a spiritual resource for the campus and membership is open to any student wishing to join.
CAMPUS GIRL SCOUTS
The purpose of this organization is to promote service in the Spartanburg community and to work with various girl-scout chapters in the area. Membership is open to any student wishing to be involved with the girl-scouts and willing to serve the community.
CANTERBURY CLUB
Canterbury Club is a Christian Fellowship organization that is sponsored by Episcopal Church. Activities include Bible study, Communion, game nights, and more. Meetings are usually held on Sunday evenings. All students are welcome, regardless of denomination.
COLLEGE DEMOCRATS
Members of the College Democrats are dedicated to the task of promoting political awareness on campus. The goal of the organization is to aid students in discovering their own political beliefs through education on the ideals of each party. Activities include watching and attending political events, meeting with politicians, round table discussions, and a Political Awareness Week. Membership is not restricted just to those who identify themselves as Democrats, but is open to anyone interested in politics.
COLLEGE REPUBLICANS
The Converse College Republicans organization offers students the opportunity to become more actively involved in the political process. The Converse College Republicans have hosted local politicians and community leaders and volunteered for many local and national campaigns. Members of the organization have the opportunity to attend the SC State and National College Republican Conventions, as well as the SC State Republican Convention. Members of the Converse College Republicans were also chosen to represent South Carolina at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, PA.
CONCEPT
Concept is a student-edited literary magazine that publishes original poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and art. The magazine provides students with the opportunity to become knowledgeable of contemporary writing and acts as an aid in teaching, working, and thinking creatively. All students are allowed to submit their creative works for publication. Those students working on the magazine gain valuable editing and business skills, as well as learn to adapt in a professional environment. Concept will accept only the highest quality of work, that which imitates Converse College’s own goals, values, and traditions.
THE CONVERSATIONALIST
The Conversationalist is Converse’s student newspaper. The paper is published monthly and provides a means for expression and communication throughout the campus. Students are invited to submit news articles, editorials, and photography for publication throughout the year.
CONVERSE II ASSOCIATION
The Converse II Association is an organization whose primary aims are to help the Converse II woman’s integration into the Converse community and to aid in making information regarding Converse II accessible to the college community.
Membership in the organization shall be open to any student at Converse College who may be interested in learning more about the Converse II program, as well as any student with Converse II status.
CONVERSE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
The Converse Athletic Association promotes spirit, sportsmanship, and fun. It sponsors the Converse College Collegiate Sports and Fitness program which offers activities in intramurals and fitness. The intramural activities include competition in volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, tennis, and golf, in addition to student-faculty games. The fitness program includes aerobics and the opportunity to participate in such activities as swimming, walking, and running. The Athletic Association is the fourth largest Association at Converse, and its membership is open to the entire student body.
CONVERSE COALITION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE ARTS
The purpose of Converse Coalition for the Advancement of the Arts is to promote and encourage community through support of the arts on the Converse College campus. Membership is open to any student interested in the arts who is involved in one or more art form on the campus. The club also publishes a calendar of art events on campus.
CONVERSE COLLEGE GOSPEL CHOIR
The purpose of this organization is to promote a spirit of unity and Christian fellowship through song and praise. The organization will also promote a spirit of loyalty, service, and fellowship to the Converse community.
CONVERSE DANCE ENSEMBLE
Converse Dance Ensemble is a performing group available for students particularly interested and talented in dance who wish to study dance beyond the beginning and intermediate levels offered in the curriculum. It is a creative and rewarding experience within the liberal arts education in that the members, under the leadership of the advisor, select subject matter, music, costuming, and actively participate in group choreographing for the spring performance in
Twichell. Auditions are held each fall and new members are selected on the basis of technique, potential, interest, initiative, and ability. Ensemble holds two technique sessions per week and more frequently before the Spring performance. Ensemble presents programs to schools in the community, as well as, participating in off campus workshops, conferences, and performances throughout the year. The Ensemble has been twice adjudicated into the South Carolina Dancing Festival since its beginning in 1996 and was the Festival host in February, 2000.
CONVERSE
COLLEGE PEER EDUCATORS
The Converse College Peer Educators has been created for the purpose of promoting and unifying an atmosphere of wellness on the Converse College campus. It promotes physical and mental health by sponsoring programs on current health issues, personal wellness, and fitness. Emphasis is on the development of a health-oriented campus, with improved quality of life for every member of the Converse community.
DANCE TEAM
The purpose of this organization shall be to provide entertainment stressing the performing aspects of both jazz and current popular dance steps. The routines are choreographed, staged, and costumed by team members to be both challenging and fun. Performances will include campus events that request our entertainment (such as basketball games and Funfest).
Membership to the Dance Team shall be open to any student enrolled at Converse College who passes an audition. During auditions we will look at dance talent, showmanship, and overall appearance. No prior dance experience is necessary to audition. We are looking for new members who are willing to commit to a year of hard work, practice, dedication and posses a positive attitude.
DAY STUDENT ASSOCIATION
The Day Student Association promotes the involvement of day students in the campus community and serves as a link between the day students and the Student Government Association. Every commuter student is a member upon her arrival at Converse. Meetings are held on the last Thursday of every month at 11:30 am in the Day Student Lounge at the corner of Wilson Hall.
EQUESTRIAN TEAM
The Equestrian Team is sponsored by Converse at the club sport level. The team is affiliated with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association and competes in shows from September until May. Tryouts are handled on an individual basis at the beginning of the academic year and practice begins immediately.
FACULTY/STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The Faculty/Student Advisory committee acts as a channel of communication between faculty, students, and the administration. The purpose is to supervise all issues that affect relations between faculty and students, plus those aspects of student life that have a bearing on the academic program, including financial aid, orientation, and career advisory. The committee consists of faculty members appointed by the President of Senate, one elected representative from each class, the Vice President of
SGA/Chair of Student Life Board, and two student representatives from the Petrie School of Music.
FRIENDS OF LESBIANS AND GAYS (FLAG)
FLAG is dedicated to providing a focus for discussion and education relating to a variety of issues surrounding societal perception concerning heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual students.
THE GRANDDAUGHTER'S CLUB
The Granddaughter's Club is an organization committed to serving as ambassadors for Converse College alumnae events and assisting the Alumnae Office with the organization of campus alumnae events (such as Reunion Weekend and Golden Club Luncheon). The membership of Granddaughters Club consists of undergraduate students who have a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, stepmother, step-grandmother, or step-great-grandmother who attended Converse for at least one year.
MODEL LEAGUE OF ARAB STATES DELEGATION
The Model League of Arab States delegation is for students with a demonstrated interest in world affairs, research, and debate. Students represent a country of the League of Arab States in one of five committees. They are responsible for thoroughly researching their country and writing resolutions on assigned topics. At the national model, held in the Spring, the students propose and debate these resolutions and other related issues concerning their country in competition with other colleges and universities. Selection to the delegation team is competitive and all students possessing the necessary skills are eligible to compete for a spot on the delegation team.
THE MUSIC EDUCATORS NATIONAL CONFERENCE
MENC is the national organization for music educators. The Converse Chapter was founded in 1947 and established to give those interested in music education a chance for membership in their professional organization and thereby keep in contact with the most recent and interesting developments in the field. Membership is open to anyone interested in music education. Representatives from Converse College may attend meetings of regional and national MENC Conventions.
MUSICAL ORGANIZATIONS
A number of performing musical organizations are open to all students at Converse College. Interested participants are urged to contact the individual directors of the groups or call the Petrie School of Music Office (9021) for information.
Converse College Chorale, is a performing ensemble which is open to the entire campus community. This ensemble prepares and performs quality choral repertoire from all stylistic periods to enhance musical life of the college community and the city of Spartanburg, at large. Participants are provided opportunities for personal enjoyment of music and the satisfaction of working with other students to achieve a common goal.
Spartanburg Symphony Chorus, is a large, mixed voice group that performs choral/orchestral works on a scheduled basis throughout the year. Open to all.
Converse Sinfonietta, performs 4-5 concerts of orchestral repertoire in a professional atmosphere with guest artists and conductors. Auditions are held at the beginning of the year and may be scheduled throughout the year by request.
Converse Wind Ensemble, is a select 45-member group of woodwind, brass and percussion musicians who perform the finest in advanced wind literature. They perform 3-5 times throughout the year and are open to anyone who qualifies by audition.
Converse Symphony Band, performs 3-5 concerts annually on campus and in the community. It is open to all individuals who are interested in the performance of band literature.
Converse Chamber Winds, is a select group of varying instrumentation who perform the finest in advanced chamber wind literature. The group performs at various concerts and functions throughout the region. Open to anyone who qualifies by audition.
Converse Opera Theater, performs 2-3 fully-staged productions with orchestra annually, as well as community performances. Auditions are held for each production.
NEWMAN CLUB
The purpose of this organization is to administer to the needs of all Roman Catholic students and faculty, as well as to all others who wish to participate. Meetings will be held on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Newman Club is affiliated with St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and Our Risen Savior Catholic Church in Spartanburg.
THE PALMETTO PLAYERS
Palmetto Players is one of the oldest college theatre groups in the country. A major in theatre is not necessary to join the club, as we encourage the participation of all students interested in theatre arts. Any student who shows an interest in theatre and attends Palmetto Players meetings is technically a Palmetto Player. However, to obtain a voting membership it is necessary to earn a specified number of hours in management, performance, and technical production and maintain a certain number of hours to retain voting privileges.
PALMETTO STATE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION
The purpose of this organization is to maintain, promote, and foster the right of all pre-service educators to have free choice with respect to membership in professional organizations and to be free from compulsory membership in any organization. The organization will encourage the development and practice of high standards of personal and professional conduct among all educators. Also, the organization will hold meetings and sponsor activities for the membership, which are designed to develop and to enhance their understanding and knowledge of educational activities throughout the world and to aid their development of skills appropriate to the practice of teaching. The organization promotes a high level of understanding of and support for education among both membership as well as the community. They unite through membership in the Association, all persons interested in promoting and maintaining the purposes of education and the Association. Membership in the Association is open to all Converse students who are interested in the purposes of the Association.
PRESBYTERIAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION
Spartanburg PSA includes Presbyterian students and their friends from
Wofford, Converse, USCS, SMC, and Spartanburg Technical Colleges. Spartanburg PSA strives to be an open-minded community which seeks to provide an environment where ALL students can grow spiritually, socially, and emotionally as joyful servants of Jesus the Christ. SCIENCE FORUM
The Science Forum is a student organization made up of Converse students interested in learning more about the sciences. We encourage participation from students in all areas of interest, as we are not exclusive for science majors. The Science
Forum sponsors a wide variety activities, both for members and the Converse community at large, including speakers, touring research and science facilities, and providing interesting and fun weekend trips. It also keeps members informed of pertinent conferences, regional events, and other campus activities. The Science
Forum also collaborates with campus organizations such as
W.I.S.E., and off-campus groups like USCS and Wofford science clubs.
SIGN SEEKERS
Sign Seekers is a campus organization open to all students interested in learning about sign language and the people who use it and interacting with deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Activities will be designed to provide enjoyment while acquainting participants with the use of a
visual-gestural mode of communication. Students are not expected to have any prior knowledge of sign language. A few basic signs will be introduced gradually for use in various activities. Plans for this year include holiday parties for the children at the South Carolina School for the Deaf, Christmas caroling in sign language, and a yearly donation to contribute to the students and staff at the South Carolina School for the Deaf.
SOUTH CAROLINA STUDENT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
The Student National Education Association (SNEA) is a professional organization for future teachers. This organization is open to any student in an education program. The Converse College Chapter carries out several projects during the year. A $14.50 membership fee includes a subscription to state and national publications as well as liability insurance.
SOUTH CAROLINA STUDENT LEGISLATURE
Members of South Carolina Student Legislature have the opportunity to learn about South Carolina legislative processes. We attend a Fall Session where bills we have written are debated and passed/failed. Spring Session is a weekend to elect chairs for the mock committees and new people. A terrific way to get to know students from other schools.
Converse has been very successful in this activity, including
being named the
Best Small College Delegation.
Many South Carolina Senators and Representatives were once members of a Student Legislature.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE
The purpose of the Student Activities Committee is to provide a diverse calendar of social and educational events in order to unify and entertain Converse and surrounding communities. A chair and co-chair are elected in the spring. Within the committee there are five sub-committees. The chairs of these committees will be appointed after elections. Six students from each class are also elected to serve as representatives to their class. The Student Activities Committee meets weekly and welcomes members of the student body to attend.
STUDENT ADMISSIONS BOARD
The Student Admissions Board is a selective student organization that works directly with the Admissions Office in recruiting new students to Converse. Students are nominated in the Spring of each year by faculty or staff members and are then asked to fill out an application if they are interested in participating. After applying, students will go through an interview process with members of the Office of Admissions, who will then vote on the next year’s members. The Admissions Office will also select 6 co-chairs who will help with the coordination of these volunteers. Students who are chosen to be on the Student Admission Board are selected for their enthusiastic personality, leadership abilities, positive attitude about Converse and academic standing. Members help to entertain prospective students visiting Converse’s campus through campus tours, hosting them in the residence halls, assisting with Open Houses, and making phone calls or writing letters.
STUDENT ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
This committee serves as a legislative body of students within the program of Intercollegiate Athletics. Two members of the following teams are appointed to serve as members: Basketball, Cross Country, Equestrian, Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball. The mission of the committee shall be to enhance the total student athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student athlete welfare and fostering a positive student athlete image.
STUDENT CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION
Because Dexter Edgar Converse founded our college as “truly religious, but never denominational,” every student is encouraged to become actively involved in
SCA. It is not a “Christian Clique” and is not exclusively for any particular type of Christian. SCA strives to create an atmosphere in which the student may develop as a person and have an opportunity to act upon her beliefs on the campus and in the community.
Held every Monday night at 8:31 pm in the Cabin, SCA meetings are a time for fellowship through songs, prayers, speakers, skits, and much, much more. SCA also sponsors Communion, coffeehouses, prayer meetings, and other special activities. Additionally, SCA sponsors special worship services such as a Thanksgiving service, an Ash Wednesday service, and Candlelight Services. SCA's weekly planning Cabinet meeting is required for officers, but open to everyone.

STUDENT COUNCIL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN
The Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) is an association of students interested in exceptional persons. It presents students with opportunities to improve educational professional standards and increase awareness of exceptional children and youth. Activities throughout the year include numerous service projects, guest speakers, fundraisers, and participation in state and regional conventions. Membership includes subscriptions to two educational journal, Exceptional Children and Teaching Exceptional Children. This is not for Special Education majors alone.
STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
The purpose of SGA is to represent the many interests of the Converse Community and to serve as a link between the Student Body and Administration. The Executive Committee Members and Representatives are elected in the Spring. Within the association there are four standing committees with the class representatives serving as chair and co-chair. The Student Government Association meets every Tuesday at 5:25 pm in Hazel B. Abbott Theatre. Every student is a member of SGA and invited to attend the weekly meetings.
STUDENT LIFE BOARD
The Student Life Board serves as a deliberating team to evaluate, discuss, research, and establish solutions to student and campus concerns. The Board is made up of students, elected and appointed, representing the four classes and organizations from all facets of campus life. The Board also has a faculty and a staff member. The Board is chaired by the Vice President of the Student Government Association and is considered a part of SGA's committee structure.
STUDENT VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Converse College has always viewed community service as one of the ways in which its founder’s ideals are furthered. In 1889 Dexter Edgar Converse wrote in his Founder’s Ideal, “. . . I desire that the instruction and influence of Converse College be always such that the students may be enabled to see clearly, decide wisely, and to act justly; and that they may learn to love God and humanity, and be faithful to truth and duty, so that their influence may be characterized by purity and power.”
The purpose of Student Volunteer Services is to promote and maintain student involvement individually or through the group in volunteer agencies and in the surrounding community. Meetings are held once a month on Wednesdays at 5:15 pm in the Private Dining Room. See the calendar for specific dates. Various volunteer core groups which are part of
SVS, also hold meetings open to all interested Converse students with a desire to be involved in at least one volunteer agency in the Spartanburg community. Student Volunteer Services is a life-enriching experience--come join us!
TARPON SHARK CLUB
The Tarpon Shark Club is the synchronized swimming club at Converse and membership is open to all students. Tryouts are held in the Fall and no experience is necessary. The Club’s many activities throughout the year include attending workshops, visiting other schools’ shows, writing, choreographing, and directing the annual water show in the Spring.
WESLEY FELLOWSHIP
Wesley Fellowship is the United Methodist organization on campus. The purpose statement says that it “seeks to engage students in Christian fellowship while affirming the quest for knowledge and embracing the witness of God’s love as it is manifest to the world.” Wesley Fellowship is a place to develop friendships, grow spiritually, be involved in retreats, and minister to the community through service projects. Students are also able to make connections with local churches. Wesley Fellowship relies on the leadership of students under the direction of the United Methodist campus minister. Meetings are held every Thursday night at 8:30 pm in the cabin.
WOMEN INVOLVED FOR A SAFER ENVIRONMENT (WISE)
The students of WISE are committed to promoting environmental awareness throughout the student body and surrounding community. WISE encourages a fuller understanding of the environmental issues in our area and the rest of the world. Past activities have included the orchestration of Environmental Awareness Week and participation in nature walks and other field trips. Membership is open to anyone interested in preserving the environment and environmental recreation.
Y’S AND OTHER Y’S
Y’s and Other Y’s is the Converse College yearbook. It is produced entirely through student efforts and is issued each spring. It gives students experience in such areas as photography, layouts, publishing, and teamwork. The staff is composed of five executive positions and a staff of volunteers.
