An extraordinarily favorable student-to-faculty ratio of 7:1, a select student body, a gifted performing faculty, and contemporary equipment and facilities prepare Petrie School graduates to make a name for themselves on the world stage.

Offering both undergraduate and coeducational graduate level degrees, the Petrie School treats music students as aspiring professionals from the moment they arrive on campus. Faculty members are not only instructors, but also mentors, role models and professional colleagues.  Set against the backdrop of a liberal arts community, the Petrie School offers performance and teaching opportunities in abundance. For example, Converse students can audition for an apprenticeship with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra, thus earning professional résumé credits and gaining experience in a broad range of repertoire while simultaneously obtaining their degree in music.  

Graduates of the Petrie School can be found on Broadway and in major symphony orchestras, opera houses, regional and municipal symphonies, jazz groups, chamber orchestras, colleges, universities, and conservatories throughout America and around the world. They are also in demand as school music teachers.

For research projects, Petrie students have access to one of the most comprehensive music libraries in the Southeast. In fact, doctoral students from other colleges and universities throughout the state conduct their research at Converse College’s Mickel Library.

Petrie students can also meet the strong intellectual challenges of various honor programs at Converse. The Music Honors Program is open to select students by application. The Nisbet Honors Program presents opportunities for music students, along with students from the College of Arts and Sciences, to conduct independent research with faculty members, take honors courses with other academically gifted students, and meet nationally known visiting scholars.
