Dr. James Buckland teaches classical guitar at Converse College and the Converse Pre-College program. He received his training at the University of Toronto under Eli Kassner, the University of Akron under Stephen Aron, and the University of South Carolina under Christopher Berg and Michael Cedric Smith. He was the first guitarist to graduate with the D.M.A. performance degree at USC, where his Doctoral research paper on the 19th century terz guitar earned him the Dean's Award for Distinguished Graduate Endeavors. His pre-college training was with Eli Kassner and the Royal Conservatory of Music. He has also studied in masterclasses with Eliot Fisk, Christopher Parkening, David Russell, Eduardo Fernandez, and many other of the world's leading guitarists.

James Buckland has appeared throughout the United States and Canada including events such as the Guitar Foundation of America festival in Charleston '99, the Great Lakes Guitar Festival, and the Guitar Society of Toronto Tenth Year Celebration. He also serves on the faculty at the University of South Carolina-Aiken as Adjunct Professor of Guitar Studies. Unique in his field, Dr. Buckland is active not only as a performer and educator but also as a luthier. He has been building guitars for over 20 years. His models of inspiration are the great luthiers of the 19th century including Staufer, Lacote and Antonio Torres. He is one of a handful of guitarists in the world who performs on the terz guitar and the conventional concert guitar.

Dr. Buckland has most recently completed a CD of solo music including works by Antonio Jose, Joaquin Rodrigo, Nicolo Paganini and the world premiere recording of Marco Aurelio Zani de Ferranti's "Fantaisie Variee sur la Romance d'Otello 'Assisa a pie' Op. 7" for terz guitar.
