The Master of Liberal Arts Program provides an opportunity for
mature learners to pursue studies in the liberal arts for both
personal and professional growth. The program requires a total of 36
graduate hours with 18-27 hours with an area of concentration in
- history
- political science
- English
In addition to a liberal arts
concentration, a student must also take 9-18 hours of electives
which may include courses from the above areas of concentration
and/or the subject areas below.
- art history
- music history
- psychology
- religion
While providing for individual development,
the program extends the professional qualifications of those
students who need a disciplinary concentration sufficient to qualify
them as junior college teachers and for those high school
teachers who want more content courses in their particular
discipline.
The MLA is the most recent graduate degree program instituted at Converse. The idea behind this program was to provide an avenue for those who may not have had an opportunity in their undergraduate programs to explore the liberal arts—those academic disciplines noted above—in the depth and detail they would like.
We have found an interest among men and women in the surrounding community who have the time and curiosity needed to read the great works of literature and study the accomplishments of scientists, world leaders, and other builders of our civilization.
The MLA is not designed as a “professional” degree nor as the first step toward a doctorate in an academic discipline. Rather, the MLA is designed to appeal to those with wide-ranging interests in the arts and sciences. This program is also one of value for teachers at all levels, including those who may already have a master’s degree in another field.
