The 1929 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction went to “Scarlet Sister Mary,” the gritty tale of a fiercely independent single mother set in a South Carolina African American farming community. The novel was a best seller at a time when American readers weren’t interested in rural African American life. The author, Converse alumna Julia Peterkin of the Class of 1896 and the only South Carolinian ever to win the Pulitzer Prize in literature, was described by W. E. B. DuBois as a Southern white woman with “the eye and the ear to see beauty and to know truth.” “The World of Julia Peterkin: Cheating the Stillness” chronicles the life of this remarkable woman who revolutionized American literature and rebelled against what was expected of a Southern lady. Produced by award-winning documentary filmmaker and Converse alumna Gayla Jamison for SC Educational Television, the film will premiere at Converse College.
